About the Image(s)

A stack of logs, fresh cuts side lit by a low sun, presented an array of tones, textures, and shapes that turned my camera on. Shot with Canon 90D, Tamron 16-300 lens, f/11, ISO 200, 1/250 s. Processed in Lightroom: BW orange filter profile, Tone Curve and Clarity boosts to highlights contrast. Suggestions?

Very good, Allen! Wood always has an interesting structure. Tis is a good play between wood and gras, light and shadow!

Great subject for black and white. I'm really drawn to the saw cuts as they turn this way and that. I did think it would benefit from a tighter crop and a bit of dodging and burning. I personally found the grass competing with the logs for attention and wanted less emphasis on that part of the frame. See what you think of my version.   Posted: 08/07/2022 15:51:31

Your crop shows me that the grass is a distraction.   Posted: 08/07/2022 23:43:17

You did a great job with the harsh lighting angle. Great B&W image. The cut marks in the wood are interesting. I am not sure I enjoy the cropped image better.   Posted: 08/13/2022 09:30:05

Going back and forth on the crop - I'll make two 8.5x11 prints and listen to my artist wife's reaction.   Posted: 08/13/2022 18:37:08

A very interesting image. I like all the different patterns at the ends of the logs. So, in my revision I went back to the original. I selected the log with the cut off protrusion as a power point in my revision. After converting the image in to mono in Photoshop, I used the Topaz sharpen filter to increase the texture of the logs and I also burned in the lower left corner.   Posted: 08/13/2022 19:16:36

Good suggestions. Using Topaz Sharpen to enhance coarse textures can have many applications.   Posted: 08/13/2022 22:56:16

Great subject, Allen! Anytime you have photographers debating a crop, you know you have nailed all of the other elements of the image. Many crops, like this one, tend to be a matter of preference, so mine would only add to the mix. I definitely think your original image is too wide a shot and suggest you pick out the most essential log/cut marks to you, include them, and compose the crop around them. The sharpening helps if not overdone. For me, I would select a very tight crop.
