About the Image(s)

In a tough weather year this rose bush has continued to put out photogenic blossoms into November. The dark red outlines of the petal shapes, contrasting soft yellow colors, and our Digital Dialogue schedule suggested a monochrome treatment. Mounted in a small glass vase on a white table next to a north window, shot with Canon 90D, Tamron 90mm macro lens, f/6.3, 1/100s, ISO 1000. Original 1 is the camera's dng file processed in LR's Adobe Color preset. After cropping, global exposure and texture adjustments, converted to monochrome with LR's B&W Red Filter preset. To darken the white table background I tried out LR's new Brush and Masking tool: Select Subject instantly created selection of the flower, Invert isolated the table, the exposure slider in the selective adjustment panel produced the final image.

Good subject for monochrome. The colors are nice, but your conversion really brings out the shapes and textures of the petals of this rose. Nice job of using the new masking tools (love them!) to darken the background. You do have a bit of haloing in the upper right that needs a bit of touch up, however. My main nit to pick about the image is that only the upper part of the rose is sharp. I'd love to see a version shot at f/11 or even f/16. The greater DOF would easily counteract the possible loss of sharpness due to diffraction.   Posted: 11/04/2021 14:10:36

A useful reminder not to trust my old eyes in the viewfinder for aperture setting.   Posted: 11/05/2021 11:27:50

I like the image, Allen, but did notice some softness in the image.

While a greater DOF would help before you take the image, I ran the image through Topaz Sharpen AI and was able to improve the sharpness (maybe too much) as shown here.

I love your mono image, so much better than the original color image. The various shades and the luminescence are wonderful. My only suggestion would be, as has been mentioned, to increase the sharpness.   Posted: 11/14/2021 19:11:50
