About the Image(s)

This photo was taken sometime in 2017 during our trip to Norway. We were visiting some old Viking houses at the Norsk Open-Air Museum in Oslo when I saw this young Norwegian girl (probably a volunteer) dressed in a native costume playing an intricately carved violin. Since the inside of the house had no electricity, I asked her if she could sit at the table beside the window and took this shot. I had to boost my ISO to 1600.

Taken with Canon 1D Mark IV, EF 70-200mm 2.8, , 1/125 sec. Used Silver Efex Pro for the monochrome conversion. Reduced the brightness of the left window and the light reflection on the table using luminousity masking with Raya Pro5. I also added a light beam coming from the right window to the main subject and set the opacity at 20% for a subtle effect using Photoshop.

What an oustanding image with beautiful lighting and details. You have a strong composition and tell a story with this photo. I also like the color version.   Posted: 09/06/2021 11:46:48

This is a terrific image and nicely processed. I only have one nit to pick. The highlighted line next to the corner of her mouth is accentuated by your processing and I eye is drawn to it. I'd suggest either toning it down or removing it altogether. Since you don't have an ongoing relationship with the subject, I don't see any problem with tweaking her face a small amount.   Posted: 09/06/2021 17:44:13

I haven't notice that before but will take note of your suggestion. Thanks Henry   Posted: 09/06/2021 19:49:48

An outstanding image with wonderful lighting and wonderful composition. My only suggestion is to darken the windows as I feel their brightness detracts from the subject. In my revision I burned in the window on the right and darkened and blurred the window on the left. I also cropped a small amount off the left side of the image.   Posted: 09/09/2021 11:06:26

A perfect picture. I cannot improve anything, this is really great. Even though the monochrome picture is perfect - I like the color version more. The play of colors and light is a plus I won't miss.   Posted: 09/09/2021 19:49:43

Jim's crop and window treatments focus our attention on your subject. In addition the line by her mouth that Henry spotted, there is a hot spot at the tip of her nose that could be toned down. Thank you for persuading her to move into this light for the photo and for sharing it with us. The museum could use it for an advertising poster.   Posted: 09/14/2021 01:26:03
