About the Image(s)

Last month we took a trip to the Oregon Coast which was foggy every day. It didn’t stop me from taking pictures. This location is Natural Bridges and the photo shows one of them. It was amazing how much detail came out with processing in Camera Raw and NIK. I removed some sensor spots and cropped out floating branches on the top left. Processed in NIK Color Efex to bring out color and detail. Then popped it into Silver Efex where I adjusted sliders for textures. Used Control points to brighten up the water flowing through the bridge and a little on the bridge. Curves were used to add a bit more contrast, then back to Camera Raw to tone down the water and rocky area at the bottom right edge. Cropped some from the left and top.

This was shot with an Olympus mirrorless. f/11.0, 1/40 and ISO 200.

Hi Darlene, I love how you captured the fog and misty look of nature. It is a very nice interpretation in B&W. Thank you for sharing this beautiful image!

One comment (I could be wrong), the picture is a bit "dark" for me.... perhaps bring up the "highlight" and/or "white" a bit to give more contrast? Just a thought... I could be wrong.   Posted: 10/12/2024 04:54:39

Hi Jennie - Thanks for taking the time to post comments. I agree about the darkness. Helpful comments are greatly appreciated. I'll have to visit your group!   Posted: 10/22/2024 05:20:48

A wonderful image and a great mono conversion from the original. To me the main area of interest is the flowing river so in my image I cropped much off he top and left side to make the river more prominent.   Posted: 10/12/2024 12:24:27

Jim - Your cropping does put the "river" at the center of attention, where it should be. This image could probably use a totally new edit. I've never tried working with a foggy scene before.
Thanks for your helpful comment and redo!   Posted: 10/22/2024 05:26:38

The lynchpin of the image for me is the wavy vertical line of foam on the shore. The foreground, near the bottom left corner stands out because it is sharper, and feels crunchy, maybe also because of small branches coming out at chaotic angles. This distracts from the beautiful composition above it. The processing of the pine trees coming down diagonally towards the bottom right looks very good. The tree on the bottom right has a semblance of a waist where it goes in a bit on its right side. I would tend to crop below that area and then retouch the above-mentioned branches on the left to eliminate these distractions to focus the viewer's gaze and emphasize your composition.   Posted: 10/18/2024 23:06:24

Christian - As I mentioned above, a total redo with reducing crunchy foliage, stronger cropping and better contrast will improve the picture. You, Jim and Jennie from group 25 have given good advice. Thanks!   Posted: 10/22/2024 05:35:07
