Lake Como at Varenna, Italy by Donna Sturla

June 2022 - Lake Como at Varenna, Italy

About the Image(s)

I went to Italy for two weeks last August, and on the second day I slipped on some rocks, fell into the lake, and broke my Nikon 17-200 lens. Broke it !
So from that point on I used my Cell Phone, a Samsung Galaxy, G 5, FE 20, which doesn't have a great camera. But the flowers were so pretty that I had to stop and take this picture. It's a lovely town and we had perfect weather !

Donna, I'm sorry to contact you this way, but I emailed my image to you several times, with follow-up emails requesting confirmation of a response. I'm assuming my image never made it to you, but I don't know why since other images and emails have made it to you in the past. I emailed your Hotmail account (copying the address from a previous email, while also responding to an email you had previously sent directly to me). Please advise. --Carrie   Posted: 06/13/2022 08:49:48

This was the perfect way for you to contact me . Every email you sent me was in my Junk folder. Why would that happen, it's never happened to anyone in this group before. I have no answer.
Thank you so much!

Donna,
Anyone going to Photo Fest in Colorado Springs? I am going for the week. We should get together if anyone is going.   Posted: 06/16/2022 11:48:07

It is a PSA conference that has tours, speakers etc. You can find it on the PSA web site. I went when it was in the Springs years ago. psa-photo.org/???   Posted: 06/16/2022 22:19:48

I love the colors in this photo. They are mesmerizing...I keep going back to look at the details. The foliage as framing works well also. My only suggestion might be to tweak the sky, if not replacing it...the blue of the sky is very similar to the blue of the mountains and water. It might help to create more contrast by adjusting the sky color or adding more clouds. --Carrie   Posted: 06/13/2022 14:49:03

I don't know how to adjust the sky color !! Some things in Photoshop are a mystery ...

First, I'm really sorry to hear about your camera lens! But you recovered nicely with a beautiful composition - it's just amazing what the cameras in phones are capable of these days. The exposure is really good also. My only suggestion would be to either lighten up the shadows a bit in the lower left and upper right, or maybe just vignette the entire frame? Just a suggestion but a really beautiful photo. I hope you got other shots on your trip before you broke your lens.   Posted: 06/14/2022 10:31:02

I broke my lens on the second day of a two week trip. So my cell phone had to do .
I'm usually not a good Travel photographer but this one turned out well. I'll try to lighten the shadow areas or vignette it a bit.
Thanks !   Posted: 06/16/2022 16:23:50

Great image by the lake. The flowers are wonderful. It looks like the exposure could be reduced some but for a cell camera it is great. I like the composition including flowers, buildings and lake. Did you get your lens fixed?   Posted: 06/16/2022 11:32:04

No I had to buy a new lens. Bummer. It was my fault.   Posted: 06/16/2022 16:21:37

I know this isn't related to your photo, but your story reminded me of my experience. I was photographing my niece's lacrosse tournament, and kept my second Canon lens in my backpack (often at my feet, when not on my back). I was very protective of my backpack, where it was never out of sight and well within reach. My brother teased me that people were going to think that I had drugs in my bag since I was so protective. Obviously, he isn't a photographer. Camera gear is expensive (and maybe my drug of choice)! --Carrie   Posted: 06/18/2022 19:52:03
