On the way to Death Valley by Doug Wolters

November 2021 - On the way to Death Valley

About the Image(s)

This was taken on the way to Death Valley from the bus, with the Olympus #M1 Mark II, the Olympus 12-100 f4 lens, 1/2500 sec. at f 4/0, ISO 1000. I just submitted it to my camera club. The judge thought the sky should be more interesting. I think an interesting sky would detract from the fantastic rock / sand formations. What do you think?

Doug, please don't shoot the critiquer! I certainly agree with you that the mountains and rock formations are magnificent. I tried many different skies and also agree with you that they detracted or just didn't do justice to this image. Finally just went with a night sky and as hokie as it may seem, it seems to work. Just don't know?   Posted: 11/12/2021 22:10:37

I think some clouds (not too many) would have made the image more interesting but I also would have saturated it just a bit.
Skies can be frustrating or marvelous, can't they ?   Posted: 11/13/2021 04:17:21

I love the depth of color you achieved in the mountains. I also agree the sky is a distraction. The mountains are the subject. Maybe just cropping out the sky would help. I can't wait to see what you come up with.   Posted: 11/13/2021 10:36:18

Great image of the colored mountains. I really like the variety of the colors. It is almost like the Wy badlands, just bigger. Sky is sky.   Posted: 11/18/2021 15:12:37
