The Owl Family by Debbie Perez

June 2022 - The Owl Family

About the Image(s)

Yes, another bird photo. This was taken from a moving boat. Used a Canon RF100-500mm with a 1.4 ext to get the reach. I did crop and did clean-up the background of stray vines and branches. I like how this one turned out but I took well over a hundred shots of the owls and the two owlets. Didn't get all four in a single shot but such is life!

WOW.....When first looking at this image I thought, amazing three owls all in a row, practically impossible. Plus from a moving boat? Great work!! Fine focus on all.
After giving you sincere praise, I am wondering if the tree on the right could be eliminated even further. Background changed? It's such an excellent image but the tree is a real unwelcome object to me.   Posted: 06/09/2022 15:55:11

Thanks, I had wondered about the tree, I will look and see if I have something to replace the tree. I have lots of photos that I might be able to take something from.   Posted: 06/10/2022 16:25:41

Debbie - very nice image. I like the softness of it. The eyes are sharp. Like Priscilla, the background tree is distracting to me. It would be nice to see all the tail feathers of the bottom bird if in the original shot. Maybe toning way down the bright background so it blends more with the background tree would help reduce the distraction. Just a though.   Posted: 06/10/2022 11:12:20

Thanks, I will play around with the background and I didn't notice the tail feathers were clipped. Need to check my original because I know I have three complete owls in most versions. I may have cropped the tail inadvertently. I can mute the background easily but was worried that a darker background would make the owls recede more and wanted them to really stand out. I will give it some thought though.   Posted: 06/10/2022 16:33:29

I agree that the background could be improved by removing the tree. Maybe some coloration change would help also, I never have liked a yellow green. Good focus and quite a catch.   Posted: 06/20/2022 12:54:00

very nice shot of the three owls. I like how they are vertically stacked on each other. You did a pretty good job on cleaning up. The tail of the top owl shows some of your clean-up. If you put this in a competition it may be held against you. The tree doesn't bother me but the branch out of the middle owl beck does.   Posted: 06/20/2022 18:00:24

WOW to capture three owls in one shot is quite a fete. All the while holding a 400 mm F/4 lens in a boat. You must have steady hands. The tree is not such a bother to me, but I would tone down the bright spots at the top.   Posted: 06/23/2022 11:09:21
