Memorial Day Evening by Priscilla Farrell

June 2022 - Memorial Day Evening

About the Image(s)

Memorial Day is celebrated in many different ways and locations. This image was taken at a local Memorial Park. They display hundreds of flags. My objective was to capture a portion of the flags at sunset. I processed the image in Photoshop Elements by darkening the bottom portion of the frame and lightened the flags by using levels.

Technical info: Camera used: Canon Power Shot, f8 @ 1250 sec., ISO 400.

Priscilla - Nice sky. I like the placement of the low spot in the tree line and how the power lines lead into it. What you might try, to improve the overall image, is to increase shadows with masking, I might suggest increasing shadows and saturation on the flags, so details and color stand out and your effect is four colorful flags against a sunset with silhouetted tree and power lines.   Posted: 06/10/2022 11:43:44

Beautiful sunset! Looking closely at this image, I see some some sort of smudges near viewer's right on the two flags. I think brightening the flags would help. Don't know if Elements has any powerful selection tools for masking but know they are in PS. If you isolate the flags and made them pop a bit more, I think this would be awesome. Good job darkening the foreground!   Posted: 06/20/2022 11:36:54

I think the sky is beautiful, however the black foreground is distracting to me. I would either lighten it up some or crop the bottom third or both.   Posted: 06/20/2022 13:01:37

You did get a very nice shot of a portion of the flags against a nice sunset. I would remove the wires and poles. Visually I feel it would be nice if you brought up the shadows in the midsection of the photo and gradually go dark on the bottom.   Posted: 06/20/2022 18:06:04

NIce idea. I think I understand what you were trying to do. To me the emphasis should be on the paraders and not the sky. I would lighten up some of the parade and the flags and crop out more of the sky.   Posted: 06/23/2022 11:18:22
