Lost in thought and smoking a cigarette. Candid Portrait. by Pinaki Sarkar

May 2021 - Lost in thought and smoking a cigarette. Candid Portrait.

About the Image(s)

Background Information:
I wanted to capture the fact that this man is lost in thought and probably that is why he is not looking at me. This is a case of a candid portrait. He is not well off, we can guess that, his glasses on both the eyes are not of same quality. While he is not rich , he is also not one who is in poverty. His face emanates education and culture. A deep sense of pride, strong on his beliefs and contentment.
Probably, there is a sense of self-realization. He is definitely one from lower middle class in West Bengal, India.
While all the above are my interpretation ...would love to hear from others..

Technical :
Canon 50mm,ISO:400, 1/60s, f/4

Post Processing:
I used Canon EOS Rebel T1i . I cropped the original image to make it tighter. I shot this hand held. I also converted it black and white, thought that it will be better this way.

Great capture but the cigarette is too much of a distraction. Maybe 'cut' it down just a bit to lose contact with the nose??   Posted: 05/09/2021 12:50:44

Your title is so very appropriate and I appreciate your description of the man. Excellent image very well executed. India is one of the places I always wanted to visit but doubt I'll ever get there. The image is a winner for me.   Posted: 05/16/2021 05:51:23

Interesting and unusual portrait. Since you've cropped the top of his head anyway, I'd suggest cropping or cloning out the bright spot of background above the top of his head. Likewise I'd suggest burning in the distracting bright door frame at the left.   Posted: 05/23/2021 16:33:30

Yes. That's Brilliant. I did not notice that. Thank you.   Posted: 05/23/2021 18:16:58

Very interesting image. I might darken light areas round the edges and the hand and cigarette - light areas are just a bit too bright and affect the overall balance.   Posted: 05/25/2021 04:01:41

A very captivating image that keeps you focused on the man's thoughts. I agree with the adjustments recommended by others. Well done.   Posted: 05/25/2021 07:49:02
