Cattle in Nairobi by Hoshedar Cooper

November 2021 - Cattle in Nairobi

About the Image(s)

This was taken in Nairobi on my last trip on the way to Masai Mara. Camera Z7ii, 24-200 mm lens at shutter speed 1/400, f9, ISO 200, 125mm focal length. Would like a frank feedback as I received mixed feedback on the image.

It is a nice story telling image. The red on the man helps the image. I reversed the image, and removed the building at the top. I think that by reversing the image you now have the road as a lead in, and the cattle are moving toward the distance. Of course you could leave the building in the image, and it would not catch the eye as much as it would not be in the upper right power point. What do you think?   Posted: 11/14/2021 10:49:36

The small black cabin is attracted my eyes from the cattle. The guy seems facing to this cabin. All these are distract focus on the cattle.
I agree Tom's comment to remove it and reversed the image, so we now can concentrate to focus on the cattle.   Posted: 11/16/2021 23:20:39

Hoshedar, I find your image tact sharp, tells a story clearly and I like the color contrast from warmth to cool in the background. Reversing the image is a clever idea. The viewer's eye tends to travel first to the man and the red wrap and leads to the cattle leading off the page.   Posted: 11/19/2021 15:50:18

I enjoyed the image as originally presented, but agree that the reversed image resonates more. Both tell a story, I can feel the heat as I look at the image. The house did not bother me, but I do like the image more with it removed.   Posted: 11/24/2021 18:04:54

Thank you Tom M. You presented a point of view I did not think about, for the better I must admit and as endorsed by the others. It vastly improves the image. Thank you Tony T, Rich and Paul for your comments. I must share this with all you. I participated in two salons with this image and it was accepted in one salon. My other Mara pictures received 26 acceptances and 4 awards so I am happy. I hope to continue to learn from all of you experienced friends and improve my skills. Thank you.   Posted: 11/25/2021 05:02:19

The cropping question is what do you want to show? Overall scene or the cattle and herder. I would crop out the top to just above the hut, so the focus is directed more to the cattle and herder. If it is travel the building cannot be removed but cropping the top would give it less importance. I agree that flipping the image has more impact. But is that allowed in whatever category you are presenting it in?   Posted: 11/25/2021 20:08:14
