About the Image(s)

The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications that were built across the historical northern borders of ancient Chinese states and Imperial China as protection against various nomadic groups from the Eurasian Steppe. Several walls were built from as early as the 7th century BC, with selective stretches later joined together by Qin Shi Huang (220-206 BC), the first emperor of China. Little of the Qin wall remains. Later on, many successive dynasties built and maintained multiple stretches of border walls. The most well-known sections of the wall were built by the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). The Great Wall is winding its staggering way along over 5,000 miles. It's long, seriously long - it would take around 18 months to walk its length.

How I did: Photos were taken in 2004. I used Nikon D70 f/9, Focus at 28mm. I work out a bit in Camera Raw and PS. I added a couple of images for reference.

Wonderful picture and thank you for the background information. The clarity of the image given its size is remarkable. I think you did a masterful job with the reference points, they really enhance the sense of distance.   Posted: 10/11/2021 15:24:04

Hello Tony, Interesting information on the Great China Wall. I like the overall perspective of the image. A couple of points for your consideration. The structure at the bottom right of the image can be removed, takes away attention from the main elements of the image which is the wall and the mountains. Second, there is a merger of sorts in terms of colour between the sky/horizon and the last cliffs. Could you maybe do some more PS work and give them a different shade so they both stand out and not kind of get merged? Otherwise a great image. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/12/2021 03:49:50

Thank you for the information on the Great Wall of China. That must have been very exciting to see in person. Your reference images show how hilly it is, and what a great engineering feat it was to make. I like your image and can see in the distance the wall continuing.   Posted: 10/14/2021 13:38:13

Including the history behind the Great Wall was appreciated. I do like your capturing what appears to be a considerable distance that highlights the massive overall effort over centuries to complete. The mountainous view is quite captivating.   Posted: 10/21/2021 16:32:23
