Small Hummingbird on a Ginger Leaf by Barbara Mallon

September 2021 - Small Hummingbird on a Ginger Leaf

About the Image(s)

This tiny, feisty hummingbird was the new “owner" of my feeder in Santa Barbara. It looks like a female but could be an immature male. My guess is it is a Rufous female. She chased other hummingbirds from dawn to dusk until the foundation repair people made it impossible to hang the feeder. Again it is a Canon 100-400 mm extended L lens at ISO 800. f 5.6 and shutter speed, 1/125 sec.

Brilliant Barbara. Superb clarity and tech specs. Nice catch light too. The white background takes away some of the white of the bird. Perhaps replacement of the background to a contrasting colour may draw more attention to the bird? Not sure, but maybe worth a shot?   Posted: 09/07/2021 08:55:19

What a great, very sharp image of the tiny bird. You have great depth of field with sharpness from beak tip back toward the folded wing tip. The wing tip being out of focus is not a problem at all. The background is blurred and not all white. It is true that the background is very light, but you have separation from the background and the bird. I also like the composition. Would not change a thing.   Posted: 09/07/2021 14:08:36

Perfect shut! It's sharp and clean with light background image. The little bird standing at diagonal position and you leave more space on front of little bird. Good composition!   Posted: 09/10/2021 13:23:12

I have always enjoyed your images with subtle colors for contrast Barbara. I feel this is an excellent capture - technically, composition and lighting. It is great as is.   Posted: 09/13/2021 16:28:31
