About the Image(s)

This old gas station is located in Halltown, MO, just off I44 on Route 66. It is a great place with the original old station dating to the 1920's, before Route 66 opened. There are several old cars and trucks there also. I liked the old station, with the Ford sedan waiting to get some gas. It was taken with my Olympus E-M5 Mark II camera, Olympus 14-150mm lens at 20mm, 1/320 seconds, f9 and ISO 200. I cropped in some, removed the tree in the upper left corner, replaced to sky in Photoshop with one that I had previously taken. I cleaned up the wires and some other small items. I did darken the gravel at the bottom of the image a bit.

Excellent composition. Perhaps the car on the right could have been fully included? Then would perhaps have achieved 16:9 ratio rather than the square? Like the cheerfulness of the image and the sharpness.   Posted: 06/04/2021 11:33:51

Charming shot of old times. When I was a boy, gas was about 29 cents a gallon.   Posted: 06/05/2021 17:21:28

Tom, this nostalgia image is packed full of interesting objects from what looks like a 1942 four seat sedan, signage, a couple old Coca-Cola dispensers, and the loveable green Sinclair dinosaur. I agree with your tidying up Tom. One suggestion would be to also darken somewhat the driveway behind the Ford and the driver side of the white car. My eyes are being drawn to them.   Posted: 06/13/2021 12:27:38

Great image, the sharpness is extraordinary. There are so many things to like about this picture, the cars, the dinosaur, the gas war, and last but not least the Coke machine.

I like the second car in the image, although I did have to think about it. I agree with Rich, if the white car could be toned down a bit it would keep ones eyed focused on the primary area.

All in all it is a thoroughly enjoyable picture.

Although the old truck on the right adds to the nostalgia, I think a more effective image would be to crop it out. The 15 cents a gallon is the shocker I am sure for those that can't remember those days. I think this tells a great story! I would burn down the edges.   Posted: 06/22/2021 16:44:31

Thanks for the comments. I kind of agree that removing the old truck on the right would bring more focus on the gas station itself. I don't remember gas being 15 cents, but remember it in the 20's, in a "gas war".   Posted: 06/22/2021 18:33:30

Tom, Very interest image. The 15 cents gas price and the old model cars are telling us a few decades historical story.
Regrettably the black car on right side not shown in full completely, otherwise removed would be better.   Posted: 06/23/2021 12:52:58

Tom, it's a great story photo! I may add the old time color for sky look?
