Smokies Rock by Tom McCreary, APSA, MPSA

October 2024 - Smokies Rock

About the Image(s)

This was taken last month at the Mountain Farm Museum in Smokies National Park. This is not what I normally think of for a museum, as it is a grouping of old buildings along a stream. I was there fairly early in the morning and so the sun was fairly low on the horizon. This rock in the stream was in sunlight, but the surrounding area was dark. It looked very striking to me, and from this angle, to looks like a turtle (it even has an eye). This is a good size rock, probably 4 feet long on the body of the "turtle". I used my Olympus camera and 14-150mm lens at 80mm, 1/160th second, f8, and ISO 200. Do you think that I would have a better image if I removed the "turtle" head, and so only showed the rock?

Tom - you have a lot of interesting stuff going on here - I cropped in, sharpened added contrast, Texture, Clarity, brightened both the rock and the reflection to get detail   Posted: 10/09/2024 20:41:47

Thanks for the edit, but I think that you cropped it too close.   Posted: 10/10/2024 17:28:13

Hi Tom. Very unusual and well spotted. Good you retained the "turtle head" Flows naturally. I like what Butch has done to the image to pump a bit more energy and light. But perhaps too tightly cropped on the left. The reflection comes out well.   Posted: 10/10/2024 10:13:30

Intriguing image but sadly failing to find the turtle head. Still, interesting and dramatic lighting on the object - turtle or no!   Posted: 10/10/2024 16:25:57

Where is your imagination? I added an image with the head circled. I also increased the saturation and brightness, as Butch had done.   Posted: 10/10/2024 17:27:30

It has got good texture. What if the left side of the rock be brightened a little?   Posted: 10/15/2024 05:20:20

The rocks fascinating. What a great nature shot! I liked Butches satuaration but your crop. Check out the lichen and you can enter it in Nature with a nature title.   Posted: 10/26/2024 22:49:12
