Water Lily by Barbara Hunley

June 2022 - Water Lily

About the Image(s)

Beautiful water lilies capture my attention very quickly but can be tricky to shoot depending on their position in the water. This water lily was taken at a nursery that specializes in selling many different varieties of water lilies. I was with a group of photographers on a field trip to this nursery and was so captured by its beauty.
At the time this picture was taken, I had a Canon Rebel XT with a 28-135mm lens and the settings were matrix metering, F9, 1/50, at ISO 200.

Hi Barbara. This is a beautiful image of a waterlily. Here in Florida they bloom freely this time of year. While it's always fun to shoot them, you are absolutely right about being tricky. The water can cause blow-outs on the image, odd reflections and frequently the most beautiful are facing the wrong way. Your image is sharp, the colors are great, and the way you handled the composition shows just enough of the center. I assume you were on a tripod with setting of 1/50; what type of post-processing did you do?   Posted: 06/13/2022 17:03:26

This image is gorgeous to say the least. As a Florida resident I'd love to know where this is as I'm very into shooting flowers and water lilies are a wonderful option.   Posted: 06/17/2022 13:26:54

Love the composition in this image. Nice left to right diagonal movement. Nice depth to this image. Nice background color of the water. Were you using a polarizer? So many water lily shots I see, no polarizer was used, causing serious reflections off the water which destroys the shot, not true here. Love the colors of the lily. Like the glow in the middle.   Posted: 06/19/2022 15:39:05

Hi, Barbara,
I agree with the others that this is a gorgeous image of the water lily! The detail shown and the two tone coloring of the short immediately caught my attention.
The gentle upward movement of the petals add much to your composition.
Just wonderful to look at!

Hi Barbara,
The crispness of this shot, diagonal composition, and rich colors are beautiful to me. The glow of in the center of the lily enhances the image for me. Thank you for sharing this beauty.

I too, wonder what type of post-processing you used. Thank you for any information.   Posted: 06/21/2022 13:20:54
