Christmas Cactus by Dick States

January 2022 - Christmas Cactus

About the Image(s)

I found this cactus in a local greenhouse. The background was a large hanging fern that was some distance from the cactus, so it was very much out of focus. Lighting was a perfect overcast sky.
This is a 13-stack image taken at f-8, ISO 200. Taken using a tripod with a polarizer on the lens.

Lovely image, Dick.
Colorful, interesting, sharp and detailed throughout and beautify lighting!
I did reverse it on my computer screen but did not add anything to your positioning of the subject. It looks attractive and fine the way it is.
So pleasing to look at!

This is a perfect example of focus-stacking shooting whis is a success. Everything in the flower is in focus and that permits to use an optimum aperture of f/8 rather than f/22 if focu-stacking were not used.
The lighting is well mastered and there is a nice harmony in the colors with green in the background and pink/yellow for the flower.
My only comment is that the cropping seems a little bit too tight. I would have used more space around the flower. But I would expect many people to disagree with me.   Posted: 01/16/2022 11:38:43

My eye is drawn to the sense of dynamic composition, depth of color, textural contrasts, and interesting flower details in this image. I find the green tones in the background to add interest and the darker tones in the bottom right corner suggest depth. Also, the green stem of the bloom seems to emerge from the background without distracting my eye from the flower. To me, this image conveys a sense of the delicate crispness of a tender bloom and the energy of its growth.

I wish there were just a bit more separation among the tiny white stamen stems, but realize that this may be an unrealistic expectation. Thank you for sharing this beauty!
