Take Me Back One More Time, Spanish Rose… by Ally Whiteneck

January 2022 - Take Me Back One More Time, Spanish Rose…

About the Image(s)

I used a special effect while in PS on my roses to create this image. Unfortunately, I have forgotten which one I used as I did this several months ago. I did like the way the colors turned out and the effect it had so decided to submit. The original image was taken in my patio garden. I have attached it for you to see, prior to processing. I know it can’t be posted. Ally Whiteneck

Equipment used:
SONY ILCE-7M3
FE 90mm Macro G OSS
ISO 400
.03 eV
F 2.8

Hi, Ally,
Also love your rose! The effect you created is truly wonderful! The dark background and the pleasing darkness the tone of the rose very effective in suggesting a mysterious mood!
Great!

It is a very neat picture. I like the dark background. But may be a color other than black (dark blue for example) could be better.
The shades and colors of the petals of the rose are perfectly well mastered. I like the softness of the lighting compared with the original.   Posted: 01/16/2022 12:03:47

Like this image very much. I think a border would even make the image better. Great work.   Posted: 01/16/2022 21:10:34

I like the first one and maybe the third one. Will you try another one that's very thin maybe about a third of the border in the first one? I think the first one is too wide. Tends to pull my eye away from the subject. Just a thin stroke. Don't care for the second or fourth.   Posted: 01/19/2022 13:14:14

I don't know how to make a frame in PS so I rely on the PS apps on my iPad. There was not an option with a very thin border. ☹️   Posted: 01/19/2022 13:28:47

I feel there are a number of artists, and I am not referring to you, that are good artists but fail in their presentation of their work. Wrong mats, mats that are cut wrong, wrong frames. Some works need mats and frames others need nothing such as gallery wraps. This is a subject in its own.

I like the gray border because it completes the work and provides limits to where my eyes go when I view the image with the black background. It's not some color that distracts from the subject in the image. I think it provides a great presentation to your image; it keeps my eye from searching into dead space. I am interested in what others think.

Dick, I agree. I seldom put borders on my photos but have to say the silverish one does finish it off nicely. Thank you for suggesting a border. I am working through tutorials in LRC and PS at the moment and it will take a few more months before I get a reasonable grasp of the more intricate options available.   Posted: 01/19/2022 14:08:45

Hi Ally,
I love seeing the effect of processing the original image to create this beautiful artistic effect. The color tones are wonderful for me. The blooms appear to float on my screen and I like that abstract effect in this image very much. Sometimes, however, I find a floating subject disturbing because I'm looking for some foundation (for example, the stem of a flower or what the object is placed upon) as long as the foundation is not distracting to pull the eye away from the subject.

Because I am seeing the image against the black background of my display I'm not sure of it's shape or how you might crop it. So, I agree that a thin boarder would enhance this wonderful image!   Posted: 01/19/2022 09:58:42
