About the Image(s)

Took this Monarch in my back yard. The lawn is the background with the darker areas shadow areas. The butterfly just came out of the chrysalis and had just finished expanding its wings. Was able to shoot this before it flew away.
Taken at f-11, 1/15 sec. exposure, ISO 200 using my 200 macro lens on a tripod.

Oh, Dick, this is magnificent!
Everything about it is wonderful, the background, sharpness, the remains of the chrysalis, and the wings pumped up ready to go. The detail on the wings is superb! The upward angle of the stick works well.
Last year I was following a chrysalis in my yard but something happened to it before it hatched. This year the Cape had only a few Monarchs around.
Brought back memories of when I taught and I took a series of slides when one hatched in my classroom, We tagged it with a migration tracking tag from Dr. Fred Urquhart - University of Toronto before we released it.
Just loved seeing this beautiful image! I can't stop looking at it!

Thank you so much for the great comments. I appreciate how you point out the elements about the image that makes it work as an image.

I really enjoyed your own personal story and how this image relates to you and your experience with a monarch in your back yard. But more important, your comments of this image bringing back memories when you taught school was special. For me this was probably the best comments I have ever received about an image. I feel when someone looks at an image and it brings back pleasant memories that we relive, I couldn't ask for more from an image. I really enjoyed your story and experience. Thanks again.   Posted: 10/08/2021 20:32:47

Hi Dick,
Thank you for sharing this remarkable photo! I think the translucency and satiny textures of the chrysalis are beautifully captured and the colors in the photo shine. I agree with Janet that the diagonal arrangement of the twig in the frame enhances the composition for me.

What I like best is that this image conveys a story for me of the emergence of a Monarch, after hanging in this vertical position, will be ready to take it's first flight.
