Posturized Day Lily by Dick States

September 2021 - Posturized Day Lily

About the Image(s)

Took this in a friends flower garden in the town where I live. I shot this on a overcast day to eliminate too much contrast in the lighting. Full sunlight usually results with images with the highlights blown out and no detail in the shadows.

I used my 200mm macro lens with an exposure of 1.5 sec. ISO 100 -.5 step. Tripod and cable release with a polarizer in the lens. In post I used a filter called artistic poster edges.

The effect you used, Artistic Poster, is quite impressive.   Posted: 09/06/2021 11:20:55

Hi, Dick.
I like your creative aspect of the lily. It really emphasis the edge of the petals against the leaves. I am unfamiliar with Artistic poster. Does it choose the color variation for the petals? The overall effect is very attractive!

This is a filter in Elements under artistic poster edges. The filter picks the variations. I find it works well on many close-ups of flowers but not all.   Posted: 09/12/2021 13:45:21

Very interesting, Dick. First time I hear about this artictic poster edges filter. Is it coming with a recent version of Photoshop? or is it Luminar?
Anyway, I like the well balanced spread of yellow area and green area. I like the edges of the leaves as well as the flower.
The texture is superb. The framing also. Nothing to change it is excellent as it is.   Posted: 09/09/2021 16:13:01

Hi Georges.
Thanks for your comments. This is in Photoshop Elements 9 which is rather old. Its under filter, artistic, then poster edges. I like this particular filter with close ups of some larger flowers. It's one of my favorite filters.   Posted: 09/12/2021 13:53:35

Hi, Dick!
What fun to see this lovely day lily with the posterization. Which option did you set to reduce the number of colors? To my eye the dark lines shown to outline the edges and distribution of fine details make the open and budding flowers pop!

I agree this is an excellent, artistic image. It would be interesting to compare it to a version without the posterization filter.   Posted: 09/17/2021 22:46:33
