About the Image(s)

I took this photograph 7 or 8 years ago when I attended the Maryland Renaissance Festival. The person playing the saw is a professional mime and a friend named Mark Jaster. Mark is amazing. Not only is he an astounding mime (he studied under Marcel Marceau), but he can produce beautiful music on the saw.

As you can see from the original, I needed to do a bit of work to “clean up” the image. My processing was done exclusively in Adobe Camera Raw until the end when I used the Topaz DeNoise AI filter.

Data: Canon 5D III; 100-400mm lens @ 164mm; 1/400 sec; f/5.0; ISO 1600

I like what you have done Pete but I would prefer the original background shade rather than pure white. You could also consider removing his badge.   Posted: 08/01/2022 15:10:15

Good suggestions and nice job showing them David! Since Mark is a friend, I'll leave his name badge in the image. But, I like the yellowish background. THANKS!

Pete, I'm curious, did you isolate the subject before using ACR to change the tone? I haven't really used ACR but it looks like you have excellent skin tone the whites are clean with texture. How easy was it?   Posted: 08/01/2022 16:07:00

Richard, although I did the image modification exclusively in ACR, I first used the Photoshop Select Subject tool and then did a CNTL-J to put just the subject on a layer by itself. Then I selected the original layer and used ACR to turn the entire image white. Then, I selected the subject layer and made my modifications to Mark using ACR.

Now that I think of it, I could have changed the background more simply by creating an all-white layer (or a yellow one) below the subject layer in Photoshop. Then I could have used ACR only on the subject layer.   Posted: 08/01/2022 16:46:08

Loving the dynamic diagonals in this image and the low point of view. I think you have a great image. Removing the background is a good idea but it looks cut out (I think from your description it is) and I would be inclined to have some texture added back in there. Plus the cream colour suggested by David helps it look like its less cut out.   Posted: 08/01/2022 23:19:12

Thank you, Mark. I will see if I can address the "cut out" issue. That shouldn't be too difficult, but it was hard for me to notice it. That's one of the huge benefits of study groups!   Posted: 08/02/2022 20:21:00

Pete, I like your white final version of My Friend Mark Jester, especially as he is photographed as a mime in costume look of "white-face" to make it a realistic performance. I can see a hint of white-face make-up. It works for me.   Posted: 08/02/2022 13:33:44

Jim, I appreciate that. Mark is an amazing mime. It's an art that I never really understood until I met Mark. I will have to think about the background since that seems to be an area of varying opinions.

Pete I love his facial expression. He is indifferent to his audience, caught up in his own moment. But am I Ignorant? what is the meaning of the red ear? I prefer the white BG. What an interesting friend to have!   Posted: 08/02/2022 20:13:02

Barbara, Mark has wonderful control of his facial expressions. He is truly brilliant. I didn't mention it in my description, but he played the saw along with a harpist and another friend on the clarinet for my daughter's wedding. All three of them were astounding. Cindy and I attended Mark's wedding. He married another mime! Now Mark and Sabrina perform together.

It's an amazing world!

OMG, you are friends with Mark Jaster. We have seen him perform so many times over the years at the Revels, and enjoyed his performances so much.   Posted: 08/14/2022 22:39:06

Yes, Mark is extremely talented. He's also a very gentle man. Mark and Sabrina are the directors of a company named Happenstance Theater. You might find their website interesting (https://www.happenstancetheater.com/).   Posted: 08/15/2022 09:15:15
