About the Image(s)

I have also converted the image to mono. I think steam locomotives often are better in mono but in this case I ask for comments on the colour version.

Camera settings 1/500sec f/11, ISO 800 300mm.

David, You have captured this train in action and the composition is excellent. In my opinion, this images looks better in color. It shows off the steam against the greenery.

I, too, prefer the color. The steam has a bit more life in color and the details in the green are much more prominent than in b & W   Posted: 07/04/2021 14:51:19

David, In my opinion, the color version is better; for one the red bar across the front of the engine is totally lost in the B&W. Also, lost in the B&W version are the flecks of color on the sides of the cars. There is more definition in the foliage and the steam in the color version.   Posted: 07/04/2021 16:11:06

I prefer the color version because it offers more contrast than the black and white. But I agree that a vintage treatment of old technology makes sense and wonder if you could create a higher contrast black and white image. Maybe playing with the color filters in Nik and increasing the contrast in the steam to help it stand out against the sky.   Posted: 07/04/2021 23:11:37

Lovely image of an old steam train. Nice composition. I like the strong red of the colour version but I find the man's blue jacket draws my eye. I might have tried to clone him out as, hey, who needs drivers?! Him apart, I have to agree that the colour works better but it might have been fun to try a vintage sepia treatment on it.   Posted: 07/05/2021 10:22:49

I've seen many images in Mono of trains and they are most pleasant with the smoke erupting, but is this case I do agree with others that the colour image is more appealing. I do like the train exiting the tunnel and the grass wavering at the sides and the addition of the driver is a plus. Good work!   Posted: 07/06/2021 08:07:44

I prefer the color. The red and green are nice, and it show better the the train is coming out of a tunnel because of the green in the tunnel opening.   Posted: 07/13/2021 16:32:38

Good shot, nice positioning and sharp (these trains move surprisingly quickly). Also good to be able to see the engine driver. My preference is for colour but the mono version is also OK.   Posted: 07/19/2021 09:15:16
