Leaves ICM by Ian Chantler

November 2023 - Leaves ICM

About the Image(s)

Each year our photo club President is allowed to choose the subject for one of the monthly competitions and this years President Sue has chosen the subject Patterns she works in textiles and textile design so a great choice from her,the only rule the patterns can not be computer generated, lucky for me because I would not have a clue how to generate one, I thought long and hard about this and wanted to create a an entry made up of by nature and architecture,I took this a while ago in a local country park just as Autumn was starting and wanted to experiment with ICM,I had forgotten about this particular image until thinking about the competition, do my esteemed friends in the Group think this matches the criteria, I do, but more opinions are always very valuable.

How I did it
Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark III lens EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM focal length 35mm f14 0.6s ISO 100. Hand held.
Raw image uploaded and adjusted in CS6 highlights reduced contrast adjusted cropped slightly all round, some slight local burning, sharpened using a high pass filter and a 2 px stroke added

Ian, I like the artistic and creative adjustments you applied to the image to create this soft looking abstract image of the autumn color leaves. Please excuse my ignorance but I do not know what ICM stands for. In my lexicum stands for "Intensive Care Medicine". I also sense some degree of blurring/movement, perhaps the camera or created by PP. Now I get it... Intensional Camera Movement !!   Posted: 11/03/2023 15:08:16

A creative abstract for sure, the soft colors offer a feeling of relaxation and has had a calming effect on me. Too me, the dark colored leaves in the top left corner provide an anchor, Good imagination my friend.   Posted: 11/06/2023 19:29:44

Ian, to my eye, the colors of this image are very pleasing. As others have said, the softness of the leaves results for me in that very relaxing feeling. To me, though there is no place for the eye to fixate, I continually wander around the image. You have done so many creative images that I'm wondering if perhaps this image would make a very interesting background for another nature image. Just a thought.

All the best.   Posted: 11/09/2023 09:38:03

Hi Gary
Yes I agree the softness does take away a main focal point but I told myself for this comp it was patterns from nature and architecture this image will not be entered in an International created purely for this comp but as you have suggested in may reappear in some form or another behind a main character.
As always your thoughts are very much appreciated.   Posted: 11/09/2023 15:00:02

I think the darker leaves serve as an anchor. To me it looks like mist is floating over the leaves or even under water. It is a relaxing lovely photo.   Posted: 11/13/2023 13:04:11

I like this Ian. The faint touch of ICM adds just enough softness to be relaxing. I see a focal point in the image with the small patch of brown about a third up from the bottom and a third in from the left. Flipping was right too, because we in the west read a picture from left to right and from foreground (bottom) to background (top) - ie from bottom left to top right. and that is just the way the ICM takes you. And to answer your question, yes in my view it fits the bill just right. Your biggest problem is finding a club judge with enough imagination and insight....   Posted: 11/14/2023 08:30:37

You have created a soft and pleasing image that doesn't need a center of interest. I love it. That would make an outstanding large print for any living room wall.   Posted: 11/29/2023 15:48:30
