This is my Grandmother Butler. She was born in 1900 and I believe this picture was taken approximately in 1918.
After listening to the Adobe Photoshop Workshop presentation this week on "Image Restoration," I went to an old scrapbook and took the BW image out and scanned it on my HP 8600 printer as a color image. I brought the image into PS and (per instruction) opened History, Layers and Adjustments. I used the History pull down to create a "Before" thumbnail. I then went into "Neuro Filters" which are new and only in PS2024. These filters allow for a number of macro changes including "Photo Restoration," "Scratch Elimination" and "Colorization." Local adjustment are made and then all are saved as a smart image. Once these are done the image can be further manipulated through other more common PS tools (ie Adjustment Layer, Masking Layers, Cropping, etc.).

Gary, I also watched that presentation and was looking for some old family photos to restore this weekend. The result that you obtained is just outstanding. This AI stuff added to Photoshop is just crazy. With exceptions, it is taking away some of the fun of being creative.   Posted: 11/02/2023 11:31:44

AN excellent restoration Gary, the color version brings these ladies to life. The time spent in the Workshop and the PP efforts have created cherished memory that can be passed down to your children. Good job my friend.   Posted: 11/06/2023 19:16:00

Hi Gary
The original was an image of amazing quality when you think of the year it was taken.I love the work you have done in the restoration I hope they now sit side by side in your family scrapbook I am not keen on AI but in this case it has done a wonderful job.   Posted: 11/07/2023 15:06:38

Gary, that is a very good restoration although, as Ian says, you did have a very good quality image to start with. How did you decide on the colours? And presumably your Grandmother is the one in the red dress?   Posted: 11/12/2023 10:52:28

Guy, I did not decide on the colors. After doing a full color scan on the B&W image, the Neuro filters in PS2024 made the selection. And yes my Grandmother is in the left in the red dress. No one seems to know who the other young woman might be.   Posted: 11/12/2023 11:10:33

I am adding the same sentiments except please put in a frame and not a scrapbook. I love the dresses. I immediately tried it on a terrible photo of the family dog from many many years ago but I did not have your luck. Will look at the presentation now.   Posted: 11/13/2023 12:12:50

It's amazing what can be accomplished on a computer and with Photoshop. I would be interested is seeing the tutorial. Can you provide a link?   Posted: 11/29/2023 15:21:13
