Bilbao Bridge by Dr Isaac Vaisman, PPSA

May 2023 - Bilbao Bridge

About the Image(s)

Bilbao Bridge was created recently on my visit to the city in the Basque Country. What an interesting place full of history and art, especially the Guggenheim Museum. When I saw the red bridge, I remembered the image that Guy presented to us in color back in October 2019 and again from a different vantage point in November 2019, this time in B&W. I had to produce a different view. Being not happy of what I saw, with a lot of intruding objects specially the light poles, I walked in the middle divider of the highway as close as I could to the bridge, without placing myself in an awkward position, and having my wife screaming at me, and using my iPhone, I created this as symmetric as possible image of the red bridge.
The metadata reads iPhone 13 Pro Max back triple camera 5.7 mm f/1.5 and with these settings: ISO 50, f/1.5 and 1/4300 sec. The image was corrected in ACR for distortion, and cropped.

Isaac, I know that you are not entering exhibitions now that you have achieved PPSA distinction. However, I will comment on both the image as you have been able to capture it and what considerations might be for an image to be submitted.

To my eye the roadway leading lines along with the underside arch of the bridge create good lines to draw my eye into the image and hold it there. The power line is a minor distraction but for PT use it must remain and does no serious harm.

From my experience brightly saturated colors can be a distraction. But I feel that these are natural (and not enhanced) and they work for me. To my eye the railing coming from the lower right also helps to lead the eye into the picture. If you could have (without further risking life or limb {and your wife's ire}) positioned yourself to get either the center dividers or the far side railing to come out of the lower left corner, the leading lines would be perfect.

Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 05/05/2023 13:39:03

This is an image taken from the other side of the River, including this bridge as well as the full body of the Guggenheim Museum. It is a fascinating City.   Posted: 05/05/2023 14:07:06

Your image offers strong colors and 4 leading lines including a bend in the road. The Sun was in the right place to offer shadows from the support wires, a nice touch.   Posted: 05/07/2023 19:31:41

Your image definitely has a lot of impact. Although the structure is strong element, the roadway offers gentle curves to the scene.   Posted: 05/08/2023 11:40:52

Isaac, I'm glad you survived both the traffic and you wife's scolding! You have got the colour exactly right. The bridge just HAS to be photographed and you have found a view that I missed when I was there. I do like the bold statement of the strong red bridge against the strong blue sky. I think that colour combination works really well. Also, I see the power pylon well framed under the bridge as an asset to the image rather than a distraction. It is part of the urban clutter that is almost inevitable. Framing it under the bridge fits with my dictum of, "If you can't fight it, feature it."

Thanks for a reminder of a visit to a most photogenic city.   Posted: 05/09/2023 12:28:50

Hi Isaac
I fully understand your need to get into the right place to get the perfect angle last week we were in the Lake District I pulled up in a layby by the side of Lake Coniston trees partially interfering with the intended shot so scrambled about 8 feet down a steep bank with tripod on left shoulder camera bag over right shoulder with Lesley shouting I would kill myself, might put up the resulting image next month.
Back to the matter in hand the red and the blue are so strident just grab your attention but so compliment one another, leading lines from every area the landscape in the background perfectly placed within the span of the bridge it was so well worth your efforts.

Well balanced colors with the eye being led to the blue sign. Vertical elements add to the modern ambiance. Usually I like clouds but think they would be a distraction here. Glad you are safe and sound.   Posted: 05/10/2023 14:36:51
