December 2021 - The Needles

About the Image(s)

How I did it—Last Oct. found Isaac, Bill B and yours truly in So. Dakota attending the PSA Convention. We spent time in Custer State Park, The Badlands, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Monument, Ghost Towns and other venues of opportunity. “The Needles” Custer State Park was one of my favorites as we caught 100% of the leaf change. One of the things that caught my eye in post was the deep depth of field the image provided. Tools for the day, Canon 5D Mark 111 and Canon 16-35 mm f2.8 lens, tripod mounted with the use of a manual release and Polarizer to cut leaf glare. Settings were 100 ISO, f 16, @ 125th of a sec. We arrived in So. Dakota at 90 degrees and heading to the airport 10 days later, 2 in. of snow at 38 degrees.

Erik, thank you for posting this image. Yes, I was there, but the eye of the master selecting the right vantage point, creates the image. We were lucky with the weather and the remaining fall colors you are giving us here. Very sharp and nice contrast between the vegetation and the needles.   Posted: 12/06/2021 09:03:41

You, Stan, Bill, Chuck, Betty Sue and yours truly were fortunate to be blessed with such good weather and a treasure trove of interesting subjects. I am looking forward to "same time next year" with our group.   Posted: 12/20/2021 11:33:03

Great shot of this rock feature with lots of detail to explore. Good contrast between the bright fall colours of the deciduous trees and the dark tones of the evergreens. I guess the plariser did its work in bringing out the saturation of the yellow leaves. There is good detail in the rocks too. There appears to be some perspective distortion from looking upwards with a wide angle lens. I wonder if you thought about correcting that in post.   Posted: 12/08/2021 06:29:10

Thanks for the suggestion Guy, I didn't notice the distortion. Will put image in P.P. again, to resolve the issue. Thanks for having my back.   Posted: 12/20/2021 11:27:02

The lighting is really good, your exposure captured it well. As said before good details and contrast in the rocks. The different shades of yellow compliment the color of the rocks.   Posted: 12/08/2021 13:18:00

Erik, I like the way the colors in this image work in harmony - the blues, greens, yellows and grays. It appears to me that your DoF and focus are spot on. To my eye the composition is strong and balanced. I think the three diagonals - the green foreground pines, the yellow aspens and the hilltops - create an image that is pleasing to my eye and holds my eye. The slight puffy clouds in the background add nicely to the mix.

In assessing the overall image I keep looking at the "partial" trees at the left and right edge. From my experience I would have preferred the entire tree, but in this case I am not sure that I would crop to remove what is there.

Thanks for sharing. Happy Holidays!   Posted: 12/10/2021 07:34:49

I had to use this crop to avoid distractions.   Posted: 12/20/2021 11:35:53

Hi Erik
Well tis certainly grabs the eyes and says look at me,love the low to high angle it really gives a real idea of the height of the cliff face as do the trees which look miniature compared to the rock face.
So agree with Guy the polariser has really done its job taken the glare off the foliage and brought out those wonderful autumnal colours,as always beautifully edited and presented.   Posted: 12/15/2021 15:16:41
