About the Image(s)

Taken in the Pantanal, as usual from a boat. Upset with myself for not zooming in but excitement got the better of me. It was middle afternoon and with the overgrown foliage it is sometimes hard to have good light. Cropped severely, adjusted white balance to warm up the jaguar, used a lot of burning and dodging in lightroom with the different tools. I also cloned some of foliage that I didn’t like so I know it is not useable to for Nature. Wish I could do this trip again.

Vella, I love the story that this tells about the ability of the leopard to hunt in camouflage within his surroundings! Nature is truly amazing. To me eye the sharpness of this image is also a key. The capture setting were spot on.

From my experience I feel the leopard should still (despite what I said above) standout more in the image. To that end in the VF I put the image into Color Efex Pro 4 and used 2 filters - Pro Contrast and Dark Edge/Light Center. I am not sure how you feel but I feel it highlights the cat a bit better.   Posted: 09/08/2021 15:38:52

Thank you, I have heard that about this image but could never figure out how to get him to stand out. I am in Quebec now so will work on it when I am home. This is a Jaguar in Brazil.   Posted: 09/09/2021 16:15:22

Vella, your ability to shoot from a boat and get a good sharp image is admirable, particularly after a massive crop like that. Your original shows the way the jaguar blends in with the grasses on the river bank, but I agree with Gary that as a picture it needs to stand out more. I took it into Photoshop (CS6) and made a rough freehand selection of the cat and feathered it generously. Then I used a Curves adjustment layer to increase the contrast and brightness a little. Using the inverse of the same selection, I used a second Curves layer to darken the surroundings.   Posted: 09/14/2021 05:15:46

Just returned from Canada and had trouble posting due to poor connectivity. Thanks for your input. After seeing Issac's comparisons, it was an eye opener how close they all look.   Posted: 09/23/2021 12:51:47

Vella, good capture of the jaguar, and obviously your camera renders a large file which allows a considerable crop as shown. I am going to play devils advocate to the image. I appreciate and commend all the good intentions of Gary and Guy to improve the image and make the jaguar stand out. If you put all three images together on a white background, there is only a very small difference on the upper background (jaguar's tail). It is very difficult to separate the jaguar from the competing background of the same color   Posted: 09/14/2021 22:42:16

Nice one Isaac! It just shows how effective its camouflage is.   Posted: 09/15/2021 07:22:38

Hi Vella
I so well remember your previous image of the Jaguar which was superb this if possible beats it,I love it just as it is, as already said the camouflage is amazing look at the colour of the grasses around its legs they are an almost identical match to the colour of the cat fabulous capture thank you for sharing.   Posted: 09/17/2021 16:20:57

Thanks, I love my Jaguar photos better than my other big cat photos I have taken in the past. I need to accept that photographing animals in the wild is hard.   Posted: 09/23/2021 12:58:27

I appreciate the remarks of the others. That said, I took another road and changed this image to Mono. In my opinion, the subject projects more mystery and shows off just how camouflaged he can be.   Posted: 09/22/2021 09:41:38

Absolutely shows his camouflage and I like how his eyes are better seen.   Posted: 09/23/2021 13:01:02
