About the Image(s)

This month’s image is fresh out of my new camera. It’s an iPhone 12 Pro Max. It began as a RAW capture where it was edited on the iPhone. I then brought it into Distressed FX Plus app where I added some texture and vignette.

PSA’er Jerry Hug got me hooked on iPhoneography several years ago. Check out his tutorial on the PSA website.

I just read an article on the new IPhone 12 for photography that was very positive. The textures and colors are very good. The sharpness is there. The only thing is the upper left black item. Could that be cloned out? The iPhone really did well with shadows as I can still see detail in them. I am impressed.   Posted: 05/09/2021 14:52:47

Bill, besides RAW capture, the iPhone can do HDR. The 12 is on my list. I have had the X for over 2 years.
Your image is so full of detail, you can almost see the individual sand grain. I am not familiar with the Distressed FX Plus app. The colors are well managed, and you still can see detail in the dark portion of the engine. I love the effects of time and the element over the old cars.   Posted: 05/10/2021 07:03:56

Excellent detail and depth of field. One advantage of mobile phone cameras is the huge depth of field from the tiny sensors and focal lengths. I don't know much about the Distressed app but you have got a very satisfying image here.   Posted: 05/10/2021 10:05:22

Bill, to my eye the technical aspects - sharpness, exposure and color are all well done. I like the way the orange, purple, green and rust colors play off against each other. AS an ex-Kodak'er it amazes me that these new phone cameras have a higher pixel density than the equivalent of the best film we ever made (@ 11M)! To my eye the fixation point is the grill and the lines of the bumper and smaller headlight circle lead my eye to that point. After some personal debate I feel that the shadows are also done correctly. That is, lightening the area to the right of the grill to bring out the spark plugs would be more of a distraction from the main composition.   Posted: 05/11/2021 08:24:45

This new toy offers an amazing depth of field and as the others stated, subject definition and handles color and sharpness beautifully. Your subject was made from a strong angle and provides the viewer strong definition supporting the varied rust elements provided in this image. Looking forward to seeing more of the above old friend.   Posted: 05/26/2021 11:39:28
