About the Image(s)

This was taken in November 2020 on the northern CA coast at Pt. Arena. It was a windy and cold afternoon. I liked how the clouds wisped in the air in sync with the waves and the light on the cliffs. I donated this photograph (matted and framed) to our local PBS station for the annual art auction. I was very pleased that it sold for more than the retail value.

Camera Settings: Nikon d500 with Tamron 18-400 lens; 1/400; f8; 18mm
I did very minor adjustments in camera raw.

Mary Ann, you have captured a lovely seascape. It's nicely exposed and all elements are placed well in the frame. The whisky clouds add interest and a touch of drama. On my screen, the lighthouse looks a little soft…but I'm chalking that up to the darn low resolution of these images. There is nothing I would change. Nicely done.   Posted: 12/06/2021 18:35:38

Michael, I did go back and look at the images. When I resized it for the group, it took away the sharpness.   Posted: 12/10/2021 14:10:30

Mary Ann,
It's a beautiful image! You've got the nice light, good composition, and great clouds. The small waves at the rocks add more feeling to the scene. Very well done!
For some reasons, I feel that the original image is a bit darker and sharper than the one currently displayed for comments.   Posted: 12/06/2021 23:53:42

I did go back and look at my images. When I resized it for the group, it took away the sharpness. Not sure why it was so dramatic in the edited version and not the original.   Posted: 12/10/2021 14:11:33

Mary Ann,
I had the same issues of losing quality image when resizing it before. There are some recommendations to deal with that, and one of them is to convert the image into smart object. Included is Brendan Williams' Youtube video for you to try: https://youtu.be/jxxjuXS4bQs

Mary Ann, your lighthouse image captures a wonderful combination of elements. I especially like the ing whisps of clouds. Nice lighting on the lighthouse to draw my eye. How cool that you donated a framed version of the photo for a charity auction! Someone else will enjoy your image while raising money for PBS.   Posted: 12/08/2021 10:14:08

Hello Mary Ann,

I also love your image this month and congratulations on the sale!!

I agree with Ruth that you have an excellent combination of elements to draw a viewer's eye to the lighthouse. The whispy clouds are unusual and eye-catching. The cool color palette works perfectly for an incredible day at the beach.

The edited image does appear a little softer than the original one. You might want to check this out. Also, you could experiment with a narrower aperture in the future with distant landscapes such as this example. Otherwise, my only other comment would be to brighten the lighter cliff areas a little more directing the viewer's eye to that lighthouse. You can do this with the dodge tool in PS.

Well done!

Hi LuAnn, I did go back and look at my images. When I resized the edited version for this group, it really took away the sharpness. I don't think that has happened to me in my prior submissions so not sure why this time. I am glad I went back and checked. Thank you.   Posted: 12/09/2021 13:03:05

Beautiful view, so great that you got a sale! Well done! My only comment is, to me, it looks like it's going downhill on the left? Possibly just because you were at 18mm and the wide angle is showing some curvature of the Earth? or it could be my eyes.   Posted: 12/15/2021 08:25:40
