About the Image(s)

I took this photo at the Great Sand Dunes in October after a snowstorm. A few hikers were climbing the dunes over snow in the cold morning.

In Lightroom and PhotoShop, I adjusted the shadows and highlights, dodged and burned, and cropped.

I used my Canon EOS 7D at f 13, 1/500, at 50 mm.

Ruth, a very nice capture of a stunning scene. Great leading lines and textural variation in the image. Including the hikers in the frame gives a sense of scale and your panoramic crop further emphasizes the vastness of the area. Nicely done. It would be interesting to see a monochrome version, given the relative lack of color in the original.   Posted: 12/04/2021 11:34:09

Michael, thank you for your comments. I agree that the high contrast in this photo makes it a candidate for black and white. What do you think?   Posted: 12/06/2021 09:53:47

Lovely landscape, Ruth; I like the black and white version as well. The added snow transforms the scene, adding texture and contrast that makes this location unique for a viewer like me. The hikers add perspective/scale and add impact. You have a nice sky with some details, and the overall color palette appears natural; all typical of your style of photography.

I do not have any changes to offer. Well done!   Posted: 12/08/2021 20:32:55

Ruth, this image really grabs me. I like how you included the hikers as they really show the immensity of the dunes. I also like the lines in the dunes with the snow. Beautiful landscape image. I also like your black and white version. With the contrast and the detail in the dunes, it came out very nice.   Posted: 12/09/2021 12:58:45

Ruth,
The inclusion of 2 people heading to the dunes after the snowstorm makes this image so compelling and interesting! I like the way you captured them in the white ground area, with a bit of separation between them and between the base line of the sand dunes. They also give a sense of scale to the vast scene. The drama clouds adds additional impact. It's a very interesting image, and I don't have any suggestion for improvement.
The B&W version is also beautiful!   Posted: 12/11/2021 17:20:21

So great, feels like a still from a end-of-the-world movie scene...   Posted: 12/15/2021 08:19:50
