About the Image(s)

This photo of White Sands National Park was taken with my Canon EOS R6 at 110 mm, f-9.5, 1/500.

In Lightroom and PhotoShop, I adjusted the lights and darks, added contrast, and converted the photo to monochrome utilizing one of the b&w presets. I love how the light highlights the ridges and drifts of the white sand and tried to feature the lighting in my image.

Ruth, you have made a stunning, Fine Art image worthy of printing and hanging on the wall, IMO! I think it was expertly managed in every aspect. I particularly am drawn to the full range of tones and the strong contrast. Good on you for previsualizing the final result in monochrome. Excellent result!   Posted: 10/03/2024 18:32:12

Thank you so much for your positive and encouraging comments, Michael. I probably wouldn't have considered this photo for B&W conversion, except that our club had a monochrome topic in this month's competition. I do like the ripples on sand for a monochrome with a lot of contrast.   Posted: 10/17/2024 21:03:50

Ruth,
I like both versions. The lighter original needed to have most of the sky removed, which I see you did in your final image. For me the final is a bit too dark; I would prefer something in-between the two, but it is very lovely. I agree with you chose to adda white line around it to make it stand out from our DD black background. Nice work.   Posted: 10/06/2024 00:03:52

Joan, thanks for your comments. I too wondered how dark to make the image. I was playing with different presets and liked how dramatic the higher contrast made the image.   Posted: 10/17/2024 21:05:28

Ruth, this is a stunning image in every respect. How did it do in the competition? The black and white conversion do justice to the layers, light and textures of the scene. Very nicely done!   Posted: 10/19/2024 21:59:40

Hi Ruth,
Beautiful image in B&W! I especially like the details of the sand in the foreground and the juxtaposition of darks and whites in a scene. Well done!
