About the Image(s)

Air show in Pine Bluff, AR. Shot handheld with Nikon D610 at 210mm, 1/200 sec, f/16, -1/3 EV, ISO 200, aperture priority. Used my own clouds to layer with planes in Luminar. Adjustments of lighting in Nik Efex Pro and Viveza. I would like to use this for our Club’s Motion competition and would appreciate suggestions for improvement.

Good angle of view and choice of shutter speed for the props. Nice use of Sky Replacement in Luminar 4. However there is a mismatch in the exposure of the planes. I suggest try increasing the exposure and decreasing shadows of the planes before bringing in the sky replacement. The sky exposure is about right, so decreasing the sky exposure as a first move would not be as effective.
Another thought is that because there is overlap in the lower two planes, removing the middle plane on the original with a sharp-edged brush or clone-stamp would be good. Also three is more appealing than four.   Posted: 05/04/2021 14:28:43

Thanks, Piers. Although originally I liked the group of three and the single, but I have changed and do like it better. One problem I am having is when trying to get rid of the shadows, it's turning a brownish color. Tried increasing whites, exposure, and decreasing shadows. Nothing worked. Suggestions?

Also, I can't seem to get my file the right size anymore for this. What are we supposed to be using for file size?   Posted: 05/05/2021 19:54:28

I'm not sure why you are seeing a brown color. With sky replace the software can have problems in deciding what is sky and can overlap onto the blue part of the planes. I tried this in Photoshop with your jpeg and a sky from my library and found this problem could be cloned out. The propeller blades seemed to fade but I cloned them back in. The company (Skylum) could possibly help you out if the browning problem persists.   Posted: 05/05/2021 22:24:37

Brilliant idea, Piers. Removing the middle plane makes it a much stronger composition. The change in the sky to add clouds is a very nice addition. I think you have a nice photo here so good luck on the competition!   Posted: 05/05/2021 10:07:56

I agree that that extra plane should be removed. Love your new sky too!   Posted: 05/05/2021 12:26:20

Shirley, great image! I love how you were able to capture the propellers in motion. I agree that 3 planes is better than 4. Sky replacements can be tricky if the light and shadows don't match the subjects'. I think I like your sky better than Piers' as I don't feels as though the planes are competing against the clouds. For me, the big white puffy clouds pull my eyes all over the image and away from the planes.   Posted: 05/06/2021 14:55:48
