Super Worm Moon by Dennis Hirning, FPSA, MPSA

May 2021 - Super Worm Moon

About the Image(s)

I had just recently gotten a new, to me, camera and was experimenting by shooting at the moon. I had some problems and reset the camera to the defaults. I started just flipping through the settings and was surprised by how well this turned out. Lately I have seen a lot of instructions on how to shoot the moon. I broke a lot of the rules and this is the one that really impressed me.

Canon 5D Mark III, 100-400mm @400mm, ISO 3,200, f/6.3, 1/8000 sec. Shot handheld, in RAW and cropped, handheld.

Dennis,
I took exactly the same image and it was put into the local paper. I think yours is slightly sharper focus. I took your image and put it into levels in PS and darkened the "seas" of the moon.   Posted: 05/03/2021 18:14:45

I think this is one of the best moon shots I've ever seen! Fantastic!   Posted: 05/08/2021 08:16:17

Nice work. Always a challenge to learn a new piece of equipment. You found the right combinations.   Posted: 05/09/2021 14:31:41

Perfect moon shot. Save it for insertion into any number of images yet to come. I'm amazed you could hand hold that long, heavy lens and get such a sharp image. Do you recall shutter speed?   Posted: 05/17/2021 08:04:06

Yup. I did put the shutter speed of 1/8000 sec. in the comment. It's not hard to hand hold that fairly still at that speed.:)

Yes, that is a good photo. Handheld even.

After looking over the photo a little closer I could see some converging lines and a hole, lower right, wear it looks like a brass frame could attach. )   Posted: 05/17/2021 18:30:16
