About the Image(s)

These pictures show monsoon photos of a storm moving into a Grand Canyon trail before I had a chance to run for shelter. Thus I was in a hurry - hairs were rising with impending lightning and I wanted to get out of the Canyon quickly. I had my waterproof Olympus Tough TG5 from my rafting trip set it on automatic so I could just point and shoot as I walked uphill and captured the scene.

The first one here shows the postprocessing editing in Lightroom where I attempted to better clarify the rainfall and texture of the descending skies; the other shot titled 'original' is what was immediately captured.

I think I could do better in post-processing beyond tweaking the exposure, details, and some saturation and I appreciate any pointers for future shots.

I think you have captured the scene well and have successfully brought out more detail in the rain. I am not familiar with Lightroom at present, I am learning how to use it but if you took the image in RAW, you would probably have been able to add more texture to the rain in Photoshop using the texture slider in the RAW converter. I think an improvement to the image as a whole would be to reduce the highlights in the rocks bottom left because the eye is rather drawn to them.   Posted: 01/09/2021 03:39:22

Thank you - I've reduced the highlights in bottom left rocks and I think they blend more into the whole than distract. Probably could either crop or reduce highlights more. The Olympus TG model I used for this photo does not support RAW - their newer models do (and I bought one!) - so next time I'm on the river or at the Canyon I'll be able to edit in RAW. newest camera!   Posted: 01/09/2021 12:06:04

I love the Grand Canyon and I like your story of the coming storm. I think you have brought out more of that drama in the second edit, which I prefer. The first one doesn't really convey that drama.   Posted: 01/10/2021 18:15:16
