About the Image(s)

This is a before and after of a favorite place on the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. I have usually been here in mid-day when the light is not so good for the brilliant colors of the Canyon to show. I hoped that the 'bones' of the Canyon might look better in black and white. This shot was captured with a Nikon D7000 42mm, f10 at 1/400 sec. Edited in Lightroom for B&W rendition. Thank you for your review. /zina

It is true that the midday sun is harsh and does not always bring out the colours at their best but we have to take the shot when we are there which may not be the best time. It is a pleasant spot and I actually like the original and would be tempted to try to enhance the colours slightly with a bit of saturation and maybe add some contrast. I like reflections and particularly the gentle reflections in the colour version. Its attraction is the colours and so for me I would rather work on the colour version and not do a black and white conversion.   Posted: 10/09/2020 17:38:25

I will work on that approach, but always worry about making the scene scomething that it wasn't. I will work on modulating some saturation and contrast, thank you.   Posted: 10/09/2020 18:47:56

I did some of the manipulation that I suggested plus a curves adjustment on the foreground to bring out some of the greens. Do you think it is realistic?   Posted: 10/10/2020 11:05:54

I was editing the original and came to something on the same order as your edit, Robert. In Lightroom, I altered the saturation and the hue and it came to look as if it's toward end of day rather than mid-day in my mind. I've got two screens and it shows differently on each screen, but I think this resembles reality. By the way, thank you David for your comment about contrast, as I also altered the contrast through LR on this pass!   Posted: 10/10/2020 22:42:55

Hi Zina,
I like this scene I would love to go there one day. I feel the only thing missing is more contrast. I feel the B&W option is a good one and the rafts in the foreground add a wonderful sense of scale. Some might say the grassy seed heads could be a distraction, there inclusion actually works for me.   Posted: 10/10/2020 21:24:42

I crouched down to capture the seedhead grasses (I was tired and sat down to rest and saw the grass and thought it would be good to have) so I'm glad you thought they worked. I tweaked the contrast in the color picture I just submitted so perhaps that will improve the image too. As for the place, I go every chance I get and highly recommend a visit!   Posted: 10/10/2020 22:46:04
