Zina,
Your image and nine others have been posted to the Digital Dialog Member's Showcase home page. I think all of them are exceptional. Thank you for your contribution this month!

To get to the Showcase, click on http://psadigital.org/ (Or simply click on the Home link at the top left of any study group's page.)

If you don't see your image, please refresh your PSA Digital page, or if necessary clear your browser history in your browser settings.

Your image will be on the Showcase web page until the middle of October.

Please let your Study Group administrator know you were selected and that your image has been posted or let your group members know if you are the administrator.

Oliver ("Pete") Morton

DD Associate Director

It was not an image that has appeared on group 98 so I asked Zina for more information and her reply is below. Robert.

They invited me to post something I had NOT shown in the DD so I chose an image I had taken pre-pandemic, at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, looking at the Desert Watchtower. It's a native cultural site now, built in the 1930's by noted architect Mary Coulter. The 11 tribes that consider the Grand Canyon sacred operate it as a visitor center. The shot was taken just post-dawn. While it might seem to be off-level, needing straightening at the horizon, it actually captures the rise of the Colorado Plateau in the distance. One of my favorite GC places, and among the least visited because it's off the beaten path where tourists usually flock. /z

Thread Title: Posting Images and Comments

There has been a debate amongst administrators about encouraging members to post images and to engage in dialogue about other members' images during the month.

In order to help in administering this group, it would help if you would let me know why you joined the group and what you hope to get out of it.

In terms of posting images each month, one suggestion was to have a monthly theme chosen by a member of the group each month to encourage us to go out and take photographs of that theme.

In relation to entering into dialogue about other images, it was noted that across all the groups there is sometimes a reluctance to comment in order not to offend the author of the image. Under the heading "Guidelines" at the top of main page there are suggestions about how to comment and there is also a course in the Education section of the main website which is free to members called "Image Analysis" that we are encouraged to join.

This is a very new group, and I'm new to this kind of discussion - what I hoped to get is exactly what I've been getting. I wanted to have the opportunity to show some of my work, and get comments on how the work could be edited differently, for different impact or effect. The group leader and members have been excellent in sharing their own edits of my work, and these have helped me a great deal. I also have enjoyed looking critically at other photos and finding words to express what is photographically attractive to me, or how I might like to see things differently. I learn from all comments about how to better my eye and my vocabulary.

With regard to having a monthly theme to get out and photograph for, this pandemic has made it all but impossible to plan a photo excursion beyond the sidewalks of my neighborhood. I suppose it would help my creativity to approach such a themed-assignment, but maybe it would be better to wait until such time as I could see beyond my nose. If it's decided to do that, I'll try to rise to the occasion!   Posted: 03/17/2021 13:22:21

I joined the group to get constructive feedback on how to improve my images and I feel that I have received good feedback in my few months of membership. It is so helpful to see our images through other's eyes- we are often blind to our own shortcomings...

Honestly, I'm not interested in a monthly theme approach.

Thanks for the opportunity to be part of the group,

Thank you Robert. I re-joined DDG after a long absence to deal with health issues. I enjoy the conversations that allow us to grow artistically and technically. I would not be interested in assigned topics, as there are groups dedicated to that.   Posted: 03/17/2021 18:34:42

Thread Title: Keeping Warm & Safe in Antartica

Zina Mirsky   Zina Mirsky
I posted a picture of kayaking in Antarctica, and was asked "how do you dress to keep warm and safe in these waters". The company outfitted us with a complete dry suit and all necessary gear that worked perfectly to keep us safe, dry and warm every day. We didn't need coats, just a couple of layers of woolens. No gloves were needed, as they had neoprene hand-holds on the paddles, so we could be nimble in our photography. We even went out one afternoon in light rain and our own hats were needed to keep the rain out of our eyes. My eyeglasses could have used windshield wipers! But I was totally dry when I got back to the ship. And warm.   Posted: 12/02/2020 19:45:26
