Milkweed Seeds by Bill Foy

January 2021 - Milkweed Seeds

About the Image(s)

This image was made a few years ago at the Gwynedd Preserve in North Wales, PA. I tweaked the highlights & shadows, added a little texture & vibrance. Nikon D500, Sigma 150mm macro lens, f/11, 1/125, ISO-400, diffused flash, handheld.

Triangles are great in this image, and could be emphasized with a little adjustment on the crop, I feel. The two (leaves?) could add a frame, but in this case, I didn't notice the one on the lower corner as much as the one on the upper left...and that one feels more like an occlusion to be as a viewer. Great lights and shadows, and I would just try to do more with the highlights on the stringy areas? I love that milkweed seed on the upper right-hand side and might suggest you try to do something to focus just on the one pod?   Posted: 01/10/2021 15:46:50

Hi Bill
This is an incredibly sharp image for being handheld. I like the colors. I wonder if you cropped off the pods on the left if it would improve the composition and focus on the middle pod.   Posted: 01/12/2021 17:13:37

Wonderful detail in this image, Bill. The silk shines so well in the light of the flash and, as Carol stated, the triangle works well in a composition.

There are some distractions here: the 5th partial seed and the bright green of the leaf. I had a go at correcting those, as well as rotating the image slightly to emphasize the triangle of seeds. What do you think?   Posted: 01/16/2021 13:09:48

An interesting photo! The light is great.
I agree, Tom's removal of the 5th seed improves it. It was on the edge too, spoiling the harmony. Pity about the 4th one. Ididn't notice it at first, but once seen it does spoil the flow of the picture. The stem (?)top left is a little distracting for me as it's different. A great subject for more shots.   Posted: 01/18/2021 16:01:35
