Tri Colored Heron Impressions by Peter Dominowski

April 2021 - Tri Colored Heron Impressions

About the Image(s)

In most of my photos I try to take very detailed and textural images. But when I saw this Tri Colored Heron at Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida, the light and reflections inspired me to try a more impressionistic approach. The shadows and reflections in the water create a more tranquil picture.

This is a beautiful bird and l think the impressionistic approach works well. for me, the yellows in the water are a bit too bright, and the blueish gray in the water too close to the color of the bird. However, I am looking at this on my laptop and the colors may be just not good on my laptop, so take this with a bit of salt.   Posted: 04/13/2021 15:38:26

I appreciate your feedback, Judy...this is not the style in which I normally shoot or process so your observations are very valuable!   Posted: 04/13/2021 19:19:14

Peter, I am not an expert on the impressionistic approach and I really like the image, but agree I would desaturate the yellow. I think that is really all it needs. I've attached an example of what that might give you. All I did was go under HSL and decrease the saturation of yellow.   Posted: 04/16/2021 16:06:59
