Reddish Egret by Sherry Icardi

September 2020 - Reddish Egret

About the Image(s)

One of my favorite birds to observe is the Reddish Egret while fishing. These guys dance all over the "pond" with their wings out looking for fish. They move quickly and it is often difficult to capture them at normal shutter speeds. This guy managed to score and get part of his breakfast. But it took 1/4000 to freeze the action.

Sony A7rIV and 100-400 lens at 400mm
Shutter 1/4000 sec
F/5.6
ISO 1250

Beautiful image! Egret and its meal are in sharp focus. I really like how the egret, its reflection and the ripples in the water create a sphere making the image complete thus bringing the gaze back to the egrets head.   Posted: 09/09/2020 21:23:51

Hi Sherry
Nice capture, very sharp and I like the way you have captured the water droplets from the egret flipping the fish. In my opinion I would have cropped as a 3 : 2 and remove the reflection as I feel it does nothing for the image. Also the egret to me looks a bit dark and could do with some lightening to help it stand out more from the water.   Posted: 09/25/2020 01:39:01
