Alaska Range by Jerry Paskowitz

November 2020 - Alaska Range

About the Image(s)

Deion: My wife and I spent ten days in Alaska capturing images of the Alaska Range and other notable scenic landscapes. We were "off the beaten track" for the whole time not wanting to photograph areas that can be seen in travel brochures. We spent most of our time on the Denali Highway, a lightly travelled 135 mile gravel road that leads from Paxson on the Richardson Highway to Cantwell on the Parks Highway. It has not been used to access the Denali National Park since 1971. We stayed at the Alpine Creek hunting lodge with our guide Dave. This image is one of the sunrise captures with the sun above the horizon, but still behind the mountains. Technical: 1/30s, f/9.5, ISO125, 155mm, Nikon D700, Nikkor AF 80-200mm f/2.8D Subtle enhancements in LrC.

Love the complimentary colors. It might be helpful to crop some off the top to balance the image.

Seems like a lot of noise in the image, but that may have been a function of the conversion to a 1 MB file.   Posted: 11/03/2020 14:42:43

Thanks Jeff,
I had not noticed the noise. Interestingly, I have had this image printed for sale on metallic paper bonded to acrylic and the final product had no visible noise. I ran the image through Noiseless CK so if I sell it again, I'll use the later version. I did not crop the sky originally (and not now neither) because I like the 'big sky'. My intent was to illustrate that the large mountains are small vis-a-vis the universe. Maybe we should add a 'statement of intent' to the images we post each month.....?   Posted: 11/03/2020 16:13:12

I am impressed by the vastness that is expressed with the photo (especially since I have driven on that road myself) which conveys to me a sense of the natural grandeur of the Alaska mountains. I like the ribbon of tree line that runs across the bottom of the image as it helps, for my eye, to get a sense of how big that valley is. I think the color contrast of this photo is excellent with the cool blues and white of the snow capped mountains with the warm colors of the clouds. Great photo, has me thinking about going back.   Posted: 11/08/2020 14:44:55

Thanks Ed, I'm glad that you noticed the trees in the immediate foreground. It was tempting to crop out, but I wanted them to anchor image without making them a central element.   Posted: 11/09/2020 16:33:57

Thanks Jean, You have very high standards and I am haunted by your earlier comment about the 'wow factor'. I am not familiar with the woodcut style that you referred to but I will definitely look it up.   Posted: 11/10/2020 12:46:16

Thanks. I learned quite a lot on that trip. We hired Dave to take us to the most photogenic locations. We went out in the early morning, after lunch and evening to shoot and then back at the lodge we processed our images in LR. Dave was a terrific LR instructor and very helpful in getting the most out of our captures.   Posted: 11/12/2020 08:18:18

I love the intent you conveyed with this picture. The colors work well together. In my opinion you captured the peacefulness of Alaska.
On a side note we drove that rode in 2017 on one of our Alaska adventures. This was the only road we ended up with a flat tire on the travel trailer, it is a very lightly travelled road. Hopefully we will be able to return soon.   Posted: 11/11/2020 15:26:20

Thanks Darcy. It was a great trip but I don't think we'll be back. If the pandemic ever ends there are many more places that I want to see.   Posted: 11/12/2020 08:19:44
