Release the Herd by Paul Smith

June 2020 - Release the Herd

About the Image(s)

Snowmass, Colorado is home to several “working” ( profitable) horse ranches. If one is nice to the ranch hands ( bring cookies or beer ) and if you stay out of their way, you are allowed sit on the fences and take photos. In this image, the herd had been corralled, all morning, near the bottom of the ranch. Here, they have been released to gallop to the top of the mountain! Notice an occasional mule in with the horses! Canon 60D, ISO 500, Canon 85 mm, f-8, 1/160 sec

Really nice composition Paul. Excellent exposure and good tonal range throughout the image. The inclusion of the hay tedder adds a point of interest.   Posted: 06/09/2020 23:34:16

Hi Paul, one of my favorite images that you've shown to our group. You made everything work with this capture. As Michael pointed out, the hay tedder is brilliantly place in the foreground to compliment the story. It's mostly a monochrome with a slight green tint - perfect.   Posted: 06/11/2020 09:10:42

Here you go again Paul, raising the bar for me to reach when I start trying my luck at B&W. I think this is a great image with a lot of artistic content. The composition for me is very good with the larger "mass" of the herd about two thirds across the frame and leading my eye to the right along with the herd as it moves to the right. I like the way the trees create a background above the herd and the grass is, for me, a nice contrast in the foreground. I agree with Michael that the machinery in the foreground is a very good addition.

I have made a few attempts at B&W since seeing your work but boy, you sure demonstrate how much I have to learn before I can share anything. I love this pic   Posted: 06/13/2020 13:34:57
