About the Image(s)

I took this image in 2019 at the French Quarter Festival. Camera - Canon 6D, Tamron 28-300mm lens, ISO 400, 1/250 second at f 10. In Lightroom I had to lighten the image, especially the shadows. I have many closeup of Doreen but I like this image that gives a wide view an idea of the atmosphere.

The performer is Doreen Ketchens, she as well as many other talented musicians perform on street corners during the French Quarter Festival. Here is a bit of her bio from Wikipedia "Doreen Ketchens (born October 3, 1966, in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American jazz Clarinetist who performs Dixieland and Trad Jazz. She has performed at concert halls, music festivals, and U.S. embassies, as well as in decades of weekly performances in Dixieland's tradition in the Royal Street Performing Arts Zone in the French Quarter of New Orleans with her band, Doreen's Jazz New Orleans. Sher has performed for four U.S. presidents and was described by Nola.com in 2012 as one of the cultural ambassadors of New Orleans."

Great shot! I love that you captured Doreen Ketchens' emotion while playing. The background is pretty busy and I find the man with the striped shirt and no head distracting.   Posted: 05/06/2022 08:17:26

Hi Beth, thanks for the comments. I have some tight images of Doreen but I chose this one for the ackground, I liked that it gave a sense of the place and atmosphere.   Posted: 05/06/2022 09:28:02

To my eye what is interesting here are the buckets with $ signs. Beth gave me the idea to just crop the whole top row. It focuses a little more on the band. If you had stepped back a couple of steps the whole of the money buckets would be there. Good eye.   Posted: 05/06/2022 16:15:14

Thanks for the comments and suggestions Chuck. I really like your cropping, I was at a loss for how to crop this while giving a feeling of place, your crop does that. Maybe I have an image with the buckets, my current view is that it is better to not try to crop to close in the view finder since it is so easy to do in post and we generally have enough pixels to spare.   Posted: 05/07/2022 08:01:21

I agree with Chuck the people in the background just distract from the main focus which is great.   Posted: 05/06/2022 19:58:37

Lou.
This is my favorite kind of street photo. I also like to turn them into Rockwell look and offer them for sale at events. This is just a quickie look but it is fun.
Beautiful job! Great memory. I bet a lot of people would love one of these.   Posted: 05/18/2022 19:07:26

I love it Marianne, well done. Do you use a filter in PS? If not how do you achieve the effect?   Posted: 05/18/2022 20:25:47
