A Rainy Day in Seoul by Albert Lee

October 2020 - A Rainy Day in Seoul

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken in 2014 when I was just starting with my street photography but it still remains as one of my favorites, This street scene was randomly taken as me and my wife were heading back to our hotel in Seoul,South Korea when the rain was starting to fall. This was shot with my first digital camera, the Olympus OMD EM5 with 22mm 1/160 sec. f7.1 at ISO 1600. Converted into B&W using Photoshop with Nik Collection and Raya Pro 5.0 .

I love this image, I think the B&W rendering is great. I like the composition with the 3 main walkers heading into the canyon formed by the buildings. The rain slick streets and the shadows of the walkers is quite dramatic. I think you have handled the tones well, there is some details in most if not all of the shadows. To my eye the sign on the left edge of the image is distracting, I think the image might be stronger if it were cropped out. All in all I think this is a beautiful image.   Posted: 10/04/2020 14:11:28

Did what you suggested by reducing the luminousity of the bright signs and cropped the edges on the left. Now, I think the image is a lot better. Thanks Lou   Posted: 10/05/2020 06:09:28

A great street shot in my opinion. Monochrome is good choice and, I wish we could see the original straight out of the camera color. Lou has an excellent thought with cropping so I did. Took it into Luminar 4 to crop and made a couple of minor adjustments. See what you think. Welcome aboard, Albert.   Posted: 10/04/2020 15:21:22

It looks great Chuck. A noticed in your adjusted photo that there seemed to be a little more grain (which is not necessarily a bad thing) . I was just curious if you did some sharpening that may have caused the grain?   Posted: 10/05/2020 06:16:14

I love this scene. I can feel the rain falling and the hustle of the people tying to get to their destinations. I love the rain reflected off the street, and the buildings lined up bringing you all the way to the end of the street. Fantastic Mood photo. Nice job!   Posted: 10/05/2020 09:26:37

Hi Albert

Lovely image. The reflections on the wet road really give the image a lift. Cropping the sign on the left as suggested before makes an improvement.   Posted: 10/05/2020 20:00:44

I like how the photo unfolds. I see several stories here as well and I see cinematic value in this shot.   Posted: 10/06/2020 07:34:51

Great atmospheric shot, the 3 walkers and the reflections make it. Agree totally with the cropping.   Posted: 10/07/2020 21:54:16

This is nicely done subject matter. I like to spot similar subjects in the groups. This month two members have shown rainy day images:
Bill Foy in Group 80.
Albert Lee in Group 92.   Posted: 10/15/2020 00:37:45
