Free Piano 4 by Geoff Shaw

March 2020 - Free Piano 4

About the Image(s)

In the Melbourne Central shopping precinct in the centre of Melbourne is a piano, free to use for whoever wants. This young man took the seat and gave a virtuoso impromptu concert. I took quite a few photos from various angles. I like this one for the juxtaposition of the face painted on the column that seems to reflect the concentration on the face of the pianist. The lighting was relatively low, so I had to use ISO1600 at 1/30 sec and f6.3; 16-35mm zoom @ 35mm.

Great composition, looks like the painting is giving him a kiss, or his muse is inspiring him! Nice symmetry with both the mural and pianist with semi closed eyes!

Any way to have gotten rid of the patrons in the upper right corner of the image, otherwise an amazing capture!!

Thanks. Good idea re background. Couldn't find enough of the background suitable to clone out the people so I gave it a try with a lens blur, which I think works.   Posted: 03/01/2020 15:49:40

Well done street shot! Color, composition, contrast are spot on. Agree the customer growing out the the pianist head is destracting. Suggest trying clone stamp tool with several brush sizes taken from the right a little at a time. Are your using PS Elements I forgot?   Posted: 03/01/2020 17:12:58

Hi Chuck, I have the full Photoshop CC and also use GIMP where it has functionality that I cannot get with PS. There is so much clutter in the background that I might try with a complete background replacement when I get time.   Posted: 03/01/2020 21:25:01

Ill try to remember that. Agree, you will probably do something not liked. It's a great image as is. Leave it alone.   Posted: 03/10/2020 18:39:22

Nice composition, as your colleagues have already discussed.
This month, there are two other keyboard photographs in the DDs. See Janet DiMattia in Group 6 and Beverly Caine in Group 48.   Posted: 03/08/2020 14:53:18

Nice scene! The colors go well together and I like the composition. The subject is also well engaged.   Posted: 03/12/2020 21:11:09
