About the Image(s)

While looking through old infrared images in my Lightroom catalog, I came across this one taken in the Palouse region of Washington State over 10 years ago. I started fiddling around with it and found I liked how well this worked in black and white. The location is a few miles to the west of Steptoe Butte, a popular landmark better known for images photographed from it than images made of it.

Processed in Lightroom, Photoshop, Silver Efex Pro II.
Canon 40D converted with a 72nm IR filter, Canon 24-105 f/4 f/11, 1/60 second, ISO 200, 47mm, Tripod used.

I like this image. Very good tonal range. The horizontal crop up from the bottom adds to the wide expance feeling. The trackes (automobiles, trucks or four wheelers) adds interest. Allthough I might like to see more sky, I can see the sky probably did not contain enough cloud formation to add interest.   Posted: 10/15/2020 09:02:43

The compositional hook for me is how the light forms the lines, shadows, shapes of the curvilinear hills; alternating layers and layers of them as you travel back into the image.

The foreground tracks are a strong supporting element to the gradations of tones shaping the undulating hills beyond.

Well composed and developed.   Posted: 10/17/2020 14:36:03
