Female Goldfinch by Evelyn Forsyth

October 2019 - Female Goldfinch

About the Image(s)

This American goldfinch is one of many taken in my backyard. It was in our peach tree. It was taken with a Nikon D7100 camera and a 300mm lens. The ISO was 300, F stop 11 and 1/200 sec shutter speed.

Your shallow depth of field helps make this work beautifully. the flowers make a nice frame to display the bird. Is it my eyes for is the branch in better focus than the bird?   Posted: 10/11/2019 07:06:29

I really like goldfinches. I think this one could be a bit sharper. Good color and composition.   Posted: 10/19/2019 15:22:02

I guess I have bad eyes.

Not bad eyes! We all see things differently. Can you do 'sharper' in Elements or Lightroom?   Posted: 10/20/2019 11:13:55

A great capture of a pretty bird. I do think that it could be a bit sharper, and the eye brighter. It is a good image.   Posted: 10/21/2019 19:51:40

I really like the background colors because for me it makes the bird stand out nicely. I have lots of finches in my backyard as well, however, I haven't been able to capture any in this way. Good job!   Posted: 10/22/2019 06:36:42

The composition is good. The aperture is just right but the focus does look a fraction off. The body is in focus but the eye lacks that sharpness. Try to focus on the eye next time because that is what the image is judged by and there will be gasps of excitement when you look at the result.   Posted: 10/22/2019 08:21:44

I do use the sharpen tool in Elements, but I am afraid of getting a halo. I wonder if the lighting makes a different in the focus. I use auto focus.   Posted: 10/22/2019 15:50:54
