Bad Hair Day by Gary Schafer

November 2020 - Bad Hair Day

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken on Lido Beach Florida a year ago in June. I was at the beach looking for nesting terns and only found one bird, a Redish Egret, so I followed him all morning. They must be a bit rare as this is the only one I have ever seen in Florida and I have been here 15 years. I didn't realize they hunt in salt water but there were times when he was off shore under water catching fish. The shot details include: F 6.3, SS=1/3200, ISO 800, Canon 5D IV with 100-400mm F4.5 L IS II. I struggled with the composition a bit. Using the rule of thirds did not work. The shot looked very out of balance. Using center composed didn't work as it looked boring. So I adjusted off center to the right until it looked ok to my eye. Comments on how to compose this shot would be appreciated.

Talk about attitude - very nice shot. I have no idea if the head feathers are naturally that way but as living on the west coast we do not get to see this kind of birds. You got the reflection in the water that is good. I go back and forth on this - there is a part of me that wishes his head was turned a bit more to his right showing only one eye and giving him more of a profile and yet I think the shot is good the way it is.
Nice and sharp image. Did you hand hold the camera?   Posted: 11/14/2020 13:38:27

Nice shot Gary, I like the composition as is too but I am curious if you had another angle at the eye level or lightly lower on ground level. In any case, the title and picture do paint the same story.   Posted: 11/21/2020 09:03:55

Wonderful photo Gary. My only problem with the composition is the right eye: I would either like to see more of it or not at all. In any case, it is a good capture.   Posted: 11/22/2020 09:54:06

Funny picture, have never seen such a bird. Nicely sharp, mirroring in the water, I have nothing I want to criticize   Posted: 11/23/2020 03:09:26

This image made my chuckle. I love the colours and I'm comfortable with the composition. I do agree it would be nice to see both eyes but it doesn't bother me that we see mostly his one eye. You might consider brightening the eyes a bit. Great capture.   Posted: 11/26/2020 08:57:40

Thank you all for the comments. I am running out of photos to share :) and am going to have to get creative in finding subjects to photograph as we feel it is too risky to be traveling these days.   Posted: 11/26/2020 10:58:43
