Cypress Lake Tobermory by Margaret Frazer

July 2020 - Cypress Lake Tobermory

About the Image(s)

This image I chose was Cypress Lake Tobermory Ontario. It is such a beautiful spot. I would love to straighten that tree but it just happened to grow that way.
I used a Canon with a 17-40 lens and shot at F14.

Beautiful place. Ontario has a few. I have fished some in Ontario and find the shoreline scenery striking. You picked a beautiful place to photograph. I am going to limit my review to a couple of things that I know a little about, landscape camera settings and composition. I would suggest F16 or even F22 for shooting landscapes and set the ISO as low as it can go. Your shutter speed will then determine the proper exposure and you get that by increasing or decreasing the shutter speed until the needle is in the middle of the meter. Before shooting and even before setup I would begin by deciding on what the subject of the photo should be. I suspect your subject is the rock structure at the back of the photo. That is where the real interest in the photo lies. You did a good job with picking the subject. I once spent a week in a class out shooting landscapes with a pro. He kept stressing to pick the subject and to remove all distractions. In other words, keep it simple. Other objects in the scene detract from the subject except what is needed to provide balance, i.e. foreground, subject, background. The foreground and the tree are examples of this in this particular photo. If I were shooting this scene I would walk out to the point to the left of the tree and set up the tripod continuing to move closer/farther until the subject nicely fills the frame and you bring an interesting foreground into play, which is usually about a third of the photo. The other thing I notice about the photo is the time of day the photo was captured. I know sometimes we have no control over the time but ideally this photo would be taken early in the morning around sunrise or later in the afternoon close to sunset. That would bring the sky into play as well. I hope this helps give you some ideas. I am not always the greatest critic :)

thanks so much!! I will keep those suggestions in mind when shooting landscape. I thought you did very well critiquing :)   Posted: 07/06/2020 08:25:01

Thanks. I am always afraid of hurting feelings and not giving enough positive feedback.   Posted: 07/06/2020 10:55:19

Gary, you did another fine job with this review. Keep it up and I'll find you a job as a photo critic. with reviews like this I could have used you on my photo jury for the contest I judged yesterday.

Margaret--Gary hit all the right points. May I suggest one additional? It you didn't do so---try shooting this on a tripod. Landscapes almost always look best when the camera is placed on a tripod. Notice nothing is razor sharp and the rocks should be. You have a bit of camera motion in this image.   Posted: 07/06/2020 11:27:05

‘. Will do! I definitely need to use my tripod more often.   Posted: 07/06/2020 11:43:26

Here are my thoughts - The image has beautiful colors - the rocks, the trees, the sky/clouds, sea - they have come out very well. My immediate focus goes to the leaning tree which if the intention, is fine but it looks a bit like a distraction in the beautiful landscape. I am not aware of how easy it is to walk around in that place, but losing that tree or shooting a different angle to the right to the left (walking up to the leaning tree) - could provide an alternate(maybe better) view point.

Thanks Dhananjay
I will try reshooting next time I'm up there using different angles.   Posted: 07/07/2020 03:56:18

Nice picture, unfortunately it seems as if the horizon is not horizontal, even though it is, because the tree in the foreground is sloping. I've been trying to cut a little at the bottom of the picture, to remove the crack in the rock that leads the eye into the tree, maybe it's better.   Posted: 07/07/2020 06:13:18

Thanks Tage. I do like the cropping of the lower part of the rocks. As much as I love that tree, I do wish it was straight :)

Hi Margaret,
Thats Just an Awesome landscape Image.I Like the colours in the water and overall composition of the pic with a good balance between the water body rocks and trees/clouds.I think the horizon need to be corrected a little bit and also We would have added little bit more contrast to the image and also a minute correction is also required in the white balance as well.If you would have added a polarizer to the lens that could prevent the harsh reflections from the rocks and beach sand. These are only my opinion and the picture is already eye catching and a great shot .   Posted: 07/10/2020 15:46:38

Nice colors but the subject is not clear and nothing is really in focus. You need to be on a tripod and focus about 1/3 into the frame for best Depth Of Field results. Using back-button-focus insures that when you re-compose the focus will not change again. Also, cropping down to feature the little tree and the rock cliff behind might be helpful. Increasing contrast and color saturation could also be helpful.   Posted: 07/14/2020 09:44:09

I took a different look at your image and cropped out much of the left and turned it into a vertical. I gave more contrast to the clouds and as well as using the ND filter in Lightroom. Brought out the shadows in the forest.
I was just trying to look at the image differently. Hope it was ok.   Posted: 07/26/2020 12:59:01

Sorry for being so late at responding. I had surgery on both eyes and have been limiting screen time. Thanks so much for your comments/suggestions. I will certainly keep them in mind next time I shoot. It is extremely valuable to get your opinions and I appreciate your efforts to help me improve my photography. I'm finally out photographing a bit more. Still lots of limitations around here but it is getting better.
Take care
