About the Image(s)

This is what I’d call an iconic image of Yosemite Falls in winter, in that everybody gets this shot if you visit. What set it apart for me was the amount of snow on the rocks and the low fog/clouds sitting in the valley. Yosemite is not known for its snowfall. Once the fog began to clear it did a nice job of framing the falls. The sky was a clear, cold blue and not pleasing to me so I replaced it using Luminar 4 with a sky I shot earlier. I also pulled as much lens distortion out as possible and made my typical adjustments for exposure, sharpening, etc. Settings were 28mm, 1/400 sec, 400 ISO and F14. I honestly should have dropped the ISO setting, but was trying to keep shutter speed up because the camera was handheld and I was shaking so much from the cold!

Rick, I really like the composition of this image. It brings back memories as I have one very similar from Mt. Denali. I think you have captured the mountain and falls with a brightness and crispness that draws and holds the viewers eye. For me I use sky substitution on a limited basis but can buy in to what you have done here - to me it looks original. From my experience I would brighten the foreground trees so that at least a small amount of definition can be seem. To my eye that might further enhance the foreground. Nice job!   Posted: 04/07/2021 09:22:25

With the fog/clouds about the sky you chose works well with the scene. I could go either way with the foreground tress with regards to Gary's comment. It's about the contrast you want to achieve: stark or more sublime. I think you did a great job for handheld in cold winter and the sharpness to my eye is very good even the trees atop the mountain. Very well done!   Posted: 04/10/2021 18:20:24

The image : "Iconic" Yosemite Falls has given a dream-effect as I imagine. The original shot is rather a simple image which has been processed to show a beautiful view. The rocks, falls, snow, blue sky, trees and natural clouds, all elements of nature is there. I think, there is no need to add clouds on blue sky. Enhancement of original image may give more natural show instead of dramatic effect by adding clouds on the sky. However, your efforts are also appreciated. Thanks a lot for sharing the image of Yosemite Falls, and it is my dream to visit such a famous place, living in eastern part of the Earth.   Posted: 04/14/2021 13:22:09

Hi Rick, I enjoyed your image. I read other comments. I agreed. I like the composition. The fog created nice creamy effect and layers behind the trees. In my view, the highlight of some edge of mountains is too high and very white area on the right bottom of the falls could reduce brightness. Well done. Thanks   Posted: 04/14/2021 23:41:27
