About the Image(s)

This shot was taken at Manassas Battlefield in Virginia. I went there, pre-dawn to capture an image of the sun rise behind a statue of Stonewall Jackson, that I had planned with the Photo Pill app. While awaiting the moment for the sun to appear, I turned around to look behind me and saw this beautiful waft of a cloud catching the morning colors.

I swung my rig around to capture this brief moment. The farm-house is part of this National Park, with the brick obelisk monument, you'll need to zoom in to see. I got a number of sunrise shots that I came for, but this was my favorite from that shoot.

Post-Processing consisted of some shadow and vibrancy boost.

Tech stuff:
Nikon D850 28mm-300mm lens at 32mm; 1/5sec. F/11, ISO-64

Hi Mike,

The early morning, pre-sunrise light has a very peaceful feel to it. I really like the subtle colors in the sky and the large, leafless tree. The large cloud and the buildings balance each other nicely. A very pleasing image!   Posted: 01/07/2020 23:44:32

Great shot! I love the contrasts - and almost "glow" of the barn and contrast with the white structure. Curious that one tree is full of leaves and the other is barren.

I note that from the middle to the far left there is a wire fence (? power line) and a white rectangular sign (I'm guessing some kind of warning). I find those a little distracting and would consider removing. They don't seem to belong.

The clouds are fantastic. Is this how they appeared? Or are they moving and blurred/smoothed by the 1/5 sec exposure?

Keen eyes, Steven. I, apparently didn't notice or overlooked the distraction of the phone polls and lines and bill board or sign along the distant roadside in the lower left, which had been, otherwise, disappeared when I cropped to reformat to a 4:5 aspect ratio for print. This shot was taken in November. There was still a little late autumn color left on the few remaining trees with clinging foliage. I have been to this National Monument Park a few times, but only in winter or late autumn. I have only seen the tree next to the cabin barren. The air, at the time of this shot was calm, albeit, very chilly, which I was entirely underdressed an ungloved for. The wisp of cloud is how it appeared, to draw my attention.

This image, in 4:5 crop,, was my November photo on the batch of calendars I published for holiday gifts. I have, subsequently, revisited and re-edited the original, pre-croped image (at 500 magnification) to remove the distractions you brought to my attention. Thank you.   Posted: 01/13/2020 09:56:28

Congratulations on this very delicate shot. It is especially nice to see that the sunrise color is not overdone in post-processing!   Posted: 01/13/2020 14:22:20
