Sunflower Study-1 by Lance Lewin

November 2019 - Sunflower Study-1

About the Image(s)

Captured in the small village of Frymburk, Czech Republic in 2017 - laying on my back and aiming up into a bright overcast sky - the back-lighting was perfect.

Digital Capture: ISO-125; Hand Held; F/1.4 50mm lens @F/2.0 gave the shallow Dof I was looking for. Aperture Priority so the camera shuttered at 1/2500 sec. Square format 15x15 print matte & framed.

Post-Production: slight brightening of the sky (adding white) in Camera Raw and also increased the luminosity of the orange or yellow to slightly enhance the opaqueness. Hope you enjoy!

Great frameable piece of art, Lance. It looks as though you photographed this flower on a light box, a technique now popular with floral photographers. When confronted with dull grey flat skies, I generally shoot with the technique you employed in mind, convert to Black & White and blow out the sky for a high contrast, high key result.
Your color rendition, however, has a pleasing painterly look. Well done!   Posted: 11/07/2019 16:41:28

Hi Mike. Really happy you like it - thank you for your support. Yeah, got to love overcast days for interesting photography possibilities. I enjoy finding and using back-lighting in photographing Flora - always results in some type of textural aesthetic.

I love the softness and translucency of the flower petals - using the overcast sky as an advantage instead of a detraction! And I like how the leaf offsets the flower a bit, making for a very pleasing composition. And you did it in color! It has a very artistic, modern look.   Posted: 11/09/2019 20:55:05

The leaf is actually my favorite part in this photograph! I am happy you brought that into the conversation. Yes, can you believe I posted (and printed) a color photograph! My wife told me, Congratulations!   Posted: 11/10/2019 01:13:22
